PS3 as DVD/AVI Player - inthemix Forums

Well I'm in the market for a new DVD Player...my current $90 one is doing all kinds of bad things and I'm sick of it. I'm looking for something that will play AVI/DivX movies and stuff, as well as normal DVD's and upscaling them etc. A mate of mine said I should look at the PS3, apparently it will play almost any file you throw at it! Anybody doing this?

Suggestions or opinions? Are you able to store AVI's onto the internal HDD, or do you need to connect up a USB Hard drive, or thumb drive with the files? Cheers

Why yes, yes we are. you can store files on the internal hard disk, which you can also replace with a bigger one if you like.

It plays most video files, and also connects to your PC to stream them like a media server.

Also it plays bluray which means you will be up to date, unlike most n00bs who still use DVDs.

If you get the playTV addon you can even record TV. go buy one, quick! oh one thing though - the bluray part is not region free on old models.

Not sure about the newer version.

PS3 is a killer media box.

Highly recommended. All you need to download is PS3 Media Server and your set.

Search/post in the PS3 thread for more info.

X360 is cheaper, has better games, a better controller and has better divX/xVid playback than ps3.

You forgot to mention HD-DVD.

LOL also xbox doesn't even have bluray, has a ridiculously loud DVD drive, its controllers don't even have rechargeable batteries out of the box, the GUI menus are lame and confusing (and not dynamic), you have to pay monthly/annual fees for xbox live, and it's built like a korean piece of poop. heck, even the old xbox was built like a tank compared to this shit. guess it's cheaper for a reason.

I love my RROD360 for games, but games are all.

I'm still using the original Xbox for media. The PS3 is pricey on the surface, but starts to look pretty good when you weigh it up against a standalone Bluray player or building your own HTPC.

I'm rating your friend's advice: Good.

I totally hate having to replace the batteries with ones fresh from a charger and continuing to play instead of having to plug the controller into the console using an incredibly short cable possibly forcing me to stop altogether.

I suppose that's a good thing yes.

Then again, you can plug the ps3 controller in for a minute and it will easily last you an extra few hours of play.

They take about an hour to fully charge, and last for a week or so after that.

Great media box. quiet operation, excellent IQ and dvd upscaling, fantastic audio output, & it's piss-easy to install a new hdd up to 500gb (any new laptop drive will do).

Plus supports any usb device i've thrown at it so far inc.

Hdd's, thumbsticks, kb + mouse, even a bloody graphics tablet.

Be sure to pick up the bluetooth remote control if you do. Quote: : Tell me about it.

Can play from my couch fully reclined no probs with cable plugged in.

But the ps3 controllers hold charge substantially better than the 360 ones in my experience and it's quite rare i have to do that.

PS3 kills the 360 as a media centre.

500GB in my PS3 + PS3 media server ftw! Cost wise its cheap as piss now.

When you consider the wireless adaptor for the 360 is another 80 - 100 bucks on top of the RRP then it's pretty much the same price for a wireless gaming media centre. However being the owner of a 360 I honestly reckon the Xbox 360 controller holds its charge for a bit longer then the PS3 if using a proper Microsoft rechargeable battery.

I had a yumcha battery in one of my two controllers and the amount of times I've had to recharge it made me chuck it out and get another official one. I also like the feel of the 360 controller more too, the PS3 is light as fuck.

True, though that defeats my argument about it coming with non-rechargeable batts. Both those posts are quite valid though.

Lol no.

Ps3 can stream mkvs now too. Quote: : The PS3 is pricey on the surface the ps3 is cheaper compared to an xbox after you've added a wireless adapter, xbox live subscription and rechargeable batteries and charger.

Why would you be paying for Live if you're only streaming media?

If he buys a PS3 he'll be forever updating the fucking thing for shit like a 'dynamic' GUI which you pay for anyway Get a WDTV and fuck your DVD's off. http://www.westerndigital.com/en/pro...sp?driveid=572 Supports a shitload of video, picture and audio formats including subtitles which neither PS3 or Xbox360 will do and it'll come in way under half the price. Music - MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV/PCM/LPCM, AAC, FLAC, Dolby Digital, AIF/AIFF, MKA Photo - JPEG, GIF, TIF/TIFF, BMP, PNG Video -MPEG1/2/4, WMV9, AVI (MPEG4, Xvid, AVC), H.264, MKV, MOV (MPEG4, H.264), MTS, TP, TS Playlist - PLS, M3U, WPL Subtitle -SRT (UTF- , SMI, SUB, ASS, SSA

Whens the WDTV2 out?
