The Parenting Pod • View topic - Why I can't sleep ...
I have not been sleeping well.
I have had pain, numbness, aches, etc in my left shoulder, arm, underarm, elbow, wrist, fingers.
I thought I had a pinched nerve.
Over the last couple of weeks, it is worse when I lay down in bed, espeically if I lay on my right side, alothough it's the left arm.
So finally, after many restless, sleepless nights, I called for a doctor appointment.
I've never seen the dr., we are new in town;
He can't see me until Jan.
16! But, the nurse said, if it's worse or you can't statnd it, go to the urgent care at the hospital.
So, a couple of days later, yesterday, Friday, I went to urgent care at about 5:30 p.m.
The Nurse Practitioner examined me, and sent me to the ER;
They were concerened it was heart problems.
So I was in ER for a couple of hours, they started an iV (OUCH), drew blood, gave me baby aspirin, and started testing me on nitrate pills (?).
Those pills made me headachy and woozy, bleah.
Then, about 7:45p.m., they said they were going to keep me to monitor me overnight.
By 9 p.m., I was upstairs in my room in the critical care unit.
They drew blood several times, they did a couple of EKGs (one down in the ER I forgot to add), and had me on a nitrate drip.
I slept fitfully and horribly, although my arm did feel better, I tend to sweat a lot when I sleep on plastic covered mattresses, even with a sheet and mattress pad.
Finally, very early in the morning, the nurse gave me something to rest.
And, boy was I out of it!
I vaguely recall them coming to take me for tests, a stress test I think, but they couldn't do the stress test as I was too loopy and out of it from the wonderful drug LOL.
I *think* they did some other test, but I vaguely recall having to hold my arms above my head as I lay on a cot in a machine.
LOL So, they were going to move me from critical care to another room, to spend the night for the stress test in the a.m., I didn't care, I was too busy napping from the wonder loopy drug!
But, then they decided to send me home, and I will go back in the morning for the stress test ...
No loopy drugs tonight.
I couldn't stay awake, Gregg, Jeff, and Haley stopped by briefly, but I couldn't stay awake, so they left.
I was in a lovely dozey nice sleep when I heard my name being called from afar, I startled, and yelled, "WHAT?!" And, it was the doctor LOL.
Did that to a nurse, too.
Maybe even Gregg, too ...
Darn those were good loopy drugs.
So far, they have not found any results that are outstanding from all the heart tests;
But they first want to rule out the most vital parts before they work their way down to it being a pinched nerve or something.
I can appreciate that;
It seems so much of the time, doctors go for the most common easy answer.
I will keep you updated.
Thanks for listening.

Wow, you've been through a lot lately!!
Was the drug Demerol?
LOL I loved that one!
Haha
I went back in the hospital the week after I had my first baby.
My blood pressure had kept climbing after I had her, and so I went back to the ER and stayed for 3 days.
They had me in intensive care so they could monitor me 24/7.
They also had me on a magnesium (I think) IV, and it kept me feeling pretty out of it.
They had me take all kinds of tests to rule out stuff.
I had 2 IVs already and they wanted to do a 3rd, and I got emotional and refused.
(I was already post partum, WITHOUT my baby, and was tired of being poked & prodded)
All that to say, I can relate to what you've been going through.
I hope they can find the answers soon!!

Robyn,
You've really been through it!
I hope they find answers for you soon.
It sounds funny to say, but I hope it is a pinched nerve.
That is painful, I know, but it's treatable and not really serious.
I've been through all those cardiac tests, too, and it's kind of unnerving.
It's good they're taking things seriously and not just blowing you off, though.
In my case, they didn't find anything wrong with my heart, so I'm hoping you get the same results.
Keep us posted.

Robyn I too hope it's just a pinched nerve and nothing more serious.
Like Traci I was rushed to the ER a couple of weeks after I had Cassidy.
Felt like my whole rib cage was in a vice, couldn't breathe or move without hurting so bad.
I think it was a panic attack...being a new mommy and all, but they did no heart tests and gave me reflux medicine mind you!
Sorry anyway I hope you feel better!
And YAY for loopy drugs!

Thanks Traci, Lori, and Ashley
Well I went back this morning, they injected radioactive stuff into my arm ( I can now shoot webs across the room ), then did a repeat of the scan they had done yesterday, that I vaguley recall LOL.
Hopefully will hear in the next couple of days what step to take next.
They did say the radiologist and the doctor were both on duty today, but as it is Sunday, I don't really expect to hear from them right away.
Thanks again for the well wishes!

No, I just made up the shooting webs part so that I could excuse the cobwebs in the corners!
My arm is still achey/sore, but not as bad as it had been.
I never felt *bad* (until after the nitrate stuff made me headachey/nauseous) just the arm bugged me and I couldn't sleep, so I was tired, too.

Thanks Heidi and Jennifer.
Well, Heidi, I guess I'll have to pass on the trunk-trip this time.
So, I have some sort of blockage somewhere.
I go see the Cardiologist on Thursday.
I'm not that old, 42, but I feel really old at the moment.

OMG Robyn, I'm thinking and praying for you tonight.
THat is totally frightening.
I have heard that shoulder/arm pain is a very early warning sign, so that all makes sense.
