Red King Hits Anchorage Stores!
Bristol Bay Red King Crab hits Anchorage stores
Published: October 24, 2007
Dutch Harbor usually keeps a busy shipping log, but from there to fishmongers here the talk is all about the arrival of the Bristol Bay red king crab.
The crabbers started sinking pots at noon Oct.
15, but reports of typically bad weather may have slowed some of the early catch.
Unlike in other years when the harvest lasted only a few days, this season the fleet can fish until Jan.
15.
Cade Smith at Fisherman's Express on First Avenue in Anchorage said he got the first haul in on Saturday.
He calls the Bristol Bay kings "the premier king crab on the world market." He has a special running -- $21.95 per pound -- on the fresh crab.
Fresh golden king crab costs $18.95.
He also has snow crab for $11.95 and Dungeness for $14.95 per pound.
In addition to an allowable haul this year of 20.4 million pounds of the red king crabs, the fleet will also go after 63 million pounds of snow crab and 5.6 million pounds of bairdi crab.
The most valuable Alaska crab fishery, red king crab, was worth some $53 million at the docks last season.

My 15 pounds of Red King will be here on Friday.
I can't wait. Never had fresh before.
It's not cheap but nothing can compare to fresh/never frozen.
It will be interesting to see if it tastes different.
I'll be sure to let you know!
Lol
I even know which boat it's coming from....the North Sea.
Anyone have a picture of it?
I bet Balu can find it.
Time Bandit crab should be available around the holidays.
Dang crab right off the boat!
Who can ask for better :-)
~ Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
