Stresa forum: Stresa to the Alps - TripAdvisor

Hi All, I asked this question before and someone was kind enough to send me a link to via Michelline with drive times.

But now I am hoping that someone can give advice based on experience, too. We are spending a few days in Stresa and want to see the Alps, particularly Monte Bianco.

Is it possible to travel there by car in a day trip?

Is it better to head north through Switzerland and France or to travel south to Milan and up through Valle d'Aosta? Any info would be greatly appreciated! postVagabonda    Here & There    Joined: Mar 2007    Forum posts: 10,409    Travel map pins: 1  Sicily

It's very possible to do this on a day trip! You would lose a lot of time going through Switzerland and France.

Stay in Italy. The road along Lake Maggiore up to Switzerland is a slow go!

So much better to stay in Italy.

Not by Milan either.

From Lake Maggiore, head south to the main freeway and then head west on the A4 towards Turin, heading for the Italian Alps.

Before Turin, the freeway branches.

Take A5 heading northwest towards Aosta ( and the French border).

The A5 continues through the Mont Bland tunnel, and into France. The autostrada through the Aosta Valley is very good, and fast.

There's also a shoulder road that runs along the autostrada, and though you may be tempted to take it since it goes through the smaller towns, don't!

Very slow going! To really appreciate Mont Blanc, you should take the cable car over the Mt.

Blanc glacier from Entreves, Italy to Chamonix, France.

It is without a doubt one of the highlights of Europe!

Be as early as possible.

Ideally, you would overnight in Entreves, or Courmayeur.

Good to also do the cable car from Italy to France, because most of the traffic will be going from France to Italy. http://www.montebianco.com/ The town of Aosta has Roman ruins, and it's a good place to stop for a meal. If you find yourself in Entreves for dinner, make reservations at La Maison de Filippo.

Reservations are a must! Samples true Valdostans cuisine in a most charming atmosphere!! http://www.lamaison.com/index_en.html frommers.com/destinations/…D42634.html This is truly a fantastic experience! Thank you for the advice and tips!!!

Even places to eat!

I have saved this to my trip file!!! Do you know if you can pre-purchase the cable car tickets to avoid the line? Unfortunately, we can not do an overnight.

This truely is a day trip so I am assuming that we will have to leave very early.

How long do you think the drive would take? Thanks again! postVagabonda    Here & There    Joined: Mar 2007    Forum posts: 10,409    Travel map pins: 1  Travel maps show where members have been and are going.

There's no need to pre-buy the ticket, (don't even think you can!)especially from the Italian side.

Entreves/La Palud are sleepy little towns.

The cable car ticket office in in La Palud, and there's plenty of parking.

Allow three hours, but it will probably be less, especially early in the morning!

Worth it without a doubt! The cable cars don't run if the weather is bad, or if it's windy.

Best advice is to get there very, very, very early.

Not only because of the lines, but because the weather gets cloudy on the mountain in the afternoon.

The cars start to run about 8:30.

They do shut down mid-day, and resume later in the day. Go all the way to Chamonix, but at Aiguille du Midi, be sure to take the elevator as high up as you can go! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aiguille_du_Midi Dress in layers, and a windbreaker is advisable.

It can be cool at 15,774 feet! posttravelbug080    Plymouth MA    Joined: Mar 2007    Forum posts: 153    Travel map pins: 47  Travel maps show where members have been and are going.

Thats a steep climb in a cable car!!!! Certainly not for those who are afraid of heights!!!

But I am sure the views are more than worth it even if you have to close your eyes all the way up! I am so excited to go.

I think we will leave about 6AM and try to get there about 9AM that way we can spend the day and explore!!!! Thanks again Vagabonda!

I will be sure to let you know how we enjoyed it postVagabonda    Here & There    Joined: Mar 2007    Forum posts: 10,409    Travel map pins: 1  Travel maps show where members have been and are going.

It is memorable!! You will be taking the cable cars in stages.

The one that goes over the glacier is a 4-person car.

It's so peaceful hanging over the glacier.

Just beautiful! Be sure to check the weather before you go.

Even on a nice day, the wind could be a factor. Check www.fondazionemontagnasicura.org for the weather on the top, and www.ohm-chamonix.com for the weather on the other side. Can also call 0165-89-961. In summer, the cable cars run from 7:30 to 12:30, then 2:00 to 5:30. Hope you have a great time!
