surprise trip to Riu Palace RM... need food examples please - Playa del Carmen Forum - TripAdvisor

I am getting married in 8weeks, and my friends at work spontaneously decided to take a last minute bachelorette party at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya. I can't seem to find any examples of the food on the buffet, or room service menu.. I am a vegetarian (though recently began eating certain types of sushi- and ahi tuna) and allergic to wheat & gluten, so I need to know if I should pack my meals or if there will be plenty to choose from there. Breakfast is no problem as there is always fruit, yogurt, eggs, etc- but for lunch and dinner I would love to see copies of menus or if anyone could share with me examples of what the buffet had to offer or what was on the room service menu. Even tortillas/tortilla chips and salsa would be fine as long as they are from corn and not flour. Any information is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

We stayed at Palace Mexico last week and walked up the beach to Riveria Maya for 2 lunches.

The food choices at both are very similar, we saw the same foods at each buffet.

I avoid meat, flour and sugar if I can and you will have no problem with food.

They have a large variety of salads, including mixed vegetable salads, no lettuce, either premade or make your own, with lots of beans, spouts, red beats and similar variety and proteins.

Lots of great salsas, guacomole, fish such as lox and tuna, good poached and fried fish out at each dinner, good vegetable soups-although may be a meat based broth-very good choice of smoothies-5 or 6 varieties at every meal-including a spinach smoothie- and a wide variety of fresh fruits-the pineapple is the best we ever had and you should be a brave soul and try the passion fruit-it is different looking-round, a mass of edible seeds in a gelatin like substance- and different tasting-sweet and sour- but very good.

I was the only one who braved it.

They also serve pasta at every meal but I guess that would be a wheat problem for you.

The room service is pretty limited-there were a few salads, club sandwiches and some other meat items, but who wants to eat in their room at such a wonderful resort.

You will love and do fine with the buffet.

The other issue about taking food is it may cause you some issues at customs, as you may have to declare it and it might (not sure) lead to inspection problems.

We got hung up coming back into Philadelphia with a souvenir coconut my daughter was bringing back.

Since it had cracked and had no fluid in it, it was allowed in.

Otherwise, it would have been double bagged and burned.

Have a great trip, you have should have no food worries and have a great wedding.

I meant lots of vegetable salads without lettuce-they do serve lots of lettuce, spinach, etc.

Thank you for the info!

I too avoid sugar, meat, flour....

A bit of a health-nut since I became aware of my wheat/gluten intolerance... funny you mention passion fruit- I buy it at Whole Foods Market all the time and put in on my yogurt- it is intimidating at first, but good and good for you! I usually bring protein bars, protein powder and peanut butter with me on trips -just in case...

And leaving the Bahamas , they confiscated my all-natural almond butter that was in my checked bag- that I brought in from the states!

(but didn't take the cuban cigars we snuck in there...didn't understand that) I will bring my bars and powder and As long as there is yogurt, fruit, water and corn tortilla chips with salsa..

I will be happy:) Thank you for your help!

Your response reminded me that there is lots of yogurt at the sakad bar-3 or 4 varieties every day.

My wife is a yogurt fan-she makes it at home-and she was in heaven!

They always have lots of fruits and fish on the buffet.

I know you will have a problem with pasta and chips since they are flour based.

They do have a number of ala carte resturants including a Japense restaurant that serves sushi.

Also, they a theme nights at the buffet which does have sushi night.

You will have aots of chioces to eat just check the menus at the ala carte resturants when you arrive to make a choice that will suit your needs.

Riu Palaces have the biggest selection at their buffets than any other resorts we have ever been to. The buffet has "cook to order" stations, so you could make adjustments to what they cook fresh for you too.

They cook entrees right in front of you in the buffet.

You can def. ask them to leave something out or add extra veggies, etc.

Thank you all- very helpful info!

We stayed at the RIU Palace Mexico last October and walked down to the RPRM for lunch.

I got violently ill on the Friday before we left from eating "something" at either the RPM or the RPRM.

Had to call the doctor who wanted to put me in the hospital because I was so dehydrated. WARNING!

BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU EAT AT BOTH OF THESE RESORTS!

I was not so lucky and spent the last two days of my vacation in the bathroom.
