Sports Arbitrage Discussion Forum - Spyware/anti virus
As I have had a computer irrevocably damaged after downloading a music file I use both my computers solely for arbs.
I have spy/anti virus (Spyware Doctor/Kapersky)but am never sure if it is the best available.
Any opinions.

I would recommend you Norton Internet Security.
It comes with Antivirus, Firewall and spyware protection all in one package.
I have used it for years and I've never had a prob

Mmmm-I have had Norton before and when i ran another programme to check how good it was I found literally hundreds of infections it hadn't blocked.
The IT peeps at Hewlett Packard have also told me it's shite and my ISP has publicly disowned it for not sorting out it's shortcomings so if you've had no problems you've done well.
It was also Norton that let the music file virus in.

Or if you dont want to pay for it, (of course people still pay for such software these days dont they ), then Id recommend AVG anti virus with sygate personal firewall and ad-aware.

I also had problems with Norton - had it once, computer f***ed up (not because of Norton), but once I had had it repaired I then was unable to install Norton again because I had at one point had it on my computer.
There were various suggested solutions, none of which worked.
Anyway, I did some researching and the one most recommended was Avast, which I now have.
Seems pretty good so far.

I have been using the free version of AVG anti-virus for about a year and until this week it had not ever found anything to mention.
Then this week it finds 3 files that look dodgy - which is great - but it then gave no indication of what I should do about it.
When I had Norton at least it lead me by the hand and explained what to do in an emergency whereas AVG left me in the dark, although I am pleased it found the nasties in the first place.
On the plus side it scan all incoming emails and attachments so maybe it rejects stuff before it becomes a problem.

For a free firewall, i used to use zonealarm.
I only use the firewall that is on my router now - don't have anything else running.
I use adaware, hijackthis and CSWsearch (i think) to get rid of adware and malware.
For antivirus i use a free online scan from pandasoftware.
If it can't disinfect a file it usually gives you the name and location of it.
As a last resort i go to the castlecops forum - they deal with alot of virus and malware stuff - giving instructions on how to clean it all up.

This was a timely thread for me.
I use Mcafee and Adaware and rarely have any problems.
But once a year or so something nasty gets in and this happened to me on Monday.
I've had it before.
It first of all sends your desktop black with a big message "You have spyware - click here to repair!"
of course you should not click.
It also spawns loads of pop-ups and cookies - literally hundreds - and drives you nuts getting "you have a potentially unwanted program" messages from McAfee.

Quite shocked by the generally fairly casual approach to security expressed in this thread - I think I must be much more uptight than I thought!
I have the best firewall/antivirus combination that I could find if you believe PC software reviews(ZoneAlarm Security Suite) plus Adaware, Spybot and Pest Patrol(soon to be replaced by Spy Sweeper or Spy doctor).
I check for improvements and new "best of breed" stuff all the time in reviews.
After all, on a busy week I place bets totalling up to 25-35K.
This is a lot of money(to me at least).
I guess some of you have much more money than that passing through your PCs.
30-odd quid a year seems cheap to me in that context.

Agreed
It's remarkable how lax most people seem to be and I have been as guilty as anyone.
Have a good think about it guys,we pass hundreds of thousands through our accounts in a year and yet seem a little indifferent to secure this info or guard against a loss of income for the sake of a few quid.

David - one thing i would add to the defrag part of your setup would be a scheduled task.
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Scheduled Tasks/Add Scheduled Task.
If Defrag is not listed, use Browse: C:\Windows\System32\defrag.exe
Then set it to run if the computer is not used for 20 min or whatever - while you're having your dinner, your disk is being kept in the best possible order.

I have also been using Spybot and the latest virus got past it.
There are some good tips here.
One useful site I found was panda which helped me to pinpoint most of the offending files and delete them.
