I really like the move.
Let me start off by saying that Ryan Smyth has an awful contract.
He is being overpaid by at least 1.25-1.5 a year.
But the Kings are getting a very good hockey player.
This is the type of guy you want leading a young team.
You're never going to question his effort.
He's got the heart and drive that you wish every hockey player has in him.
Now I'm done with the typical charachter and heart stuff...and on to why it works out in other ways.
They gave up very little.
Quincey is an up and coming player but the Kings have Johnson, Doughty and now Scuderi.
The fact is they got rid of Tom Preissing and his awful contract.
The Kings were fooled by Preissing's numbers with Ottawa, where he got significant time playing behind the Heatley-Spezza-Alfredsson line, and gave him a terrible contract.
It seemed like he wasn't even in the plans to be in the top 6 this season anyway.
With the players they dropped, the Kings are only taking on a little more than 3 million in salary a season.
That isn't bad at all for Ryan Smyth.
Dean Lombardi said he liked Smyth more than most of the free agents out there, and if you get a chance to dump a guy like Preissing...why not?
Montreal gives Gionta 5/25.
The Rangers give Gaborik 5/37.5.
The Kings add a guy for essentially 3.25 a year.

It was in the trade thread.
i happen to think it's an awful move.
Ryan smyth is a player on the decline, and when the kings actually get good, smyth will be a cipher, sucking up valuable cap room while providing very little.
They get rid of the preissing contract which is good, but they give up one of the cheaper, better contracts in the game with quincey's 550k this season.

I think awful is a strong word to use.
The Kings had a nice size of cap room to bring in a big player.
Smyth brings intangibles that you can't always measure by most stats.
Only wins we'll decide that and the development of young players.
If the addition of Smyth gets the Kings into the playoffs...well I think it's a good deal.
For all we know their owner wanted to win now and was tired of collecting prospects.
Maybe it was discussed that they were going to add a top player this off-season.
Can you blame Lombardi for not going after anyone who was on the market?
Maybe have paid Gaborik 8 mill plus have Preissing's contract and add a substantial raise to Quincey likely paying him over 3 if it is no fluke?
Now you might say that they shouldn't hae done anything
Quincey had a great contract for this season, but that's just it.
And they weren't going to win this year with him.
The Kings have plenty of young defense in Doughty, Johnson and Hickey.
There is something about guys like Ryan Smyth and Chris Drury...that you just want them on your team.
The Rangers paid way too much for Drury and brought him onto a team that cancels out his leadership qualities, but Smyth is in the right spot for all his qualities to shine.

and then you overpay for them because the fact is that they just don't produce as much as you think they do.
Colorado way overpaid and got out from under a terrible contract, good for them.
Preissing gives them depth since 3 of their D are likely being dealt off at the deadline.
the kings may compete for the playoffs this year, but they will likely fall short.
That's not an indictment - they need to at least be close.
So to that end, smyth is a fine acquisition.
It's just my opinion that smyth's best days are behind him and the kings are on the hook for too many more of them.
i say they shouldn't have done anything.
Ryan smyth will be paid $6.25 million in 2011-12 as a 35-36 year old.
He will be finished.
And the kings will be on the cusp of contention, right when they need him most.
