NFL Forum :: - Bengals sign former Cowboys safety Roy Williams
Quote: : The Bengals have agreed to terms with former Cowboys free safety Roy Williams.

The Bengals signed former Cowboys safety Roy Williams.
Roy Williams asked to be traded or released by the Cowboys and got his wish earlier in the off-season, Williams was drafted 8th overall in the 2002 draft by the Cowboys.
Williams has struggled badly in coverage and the team was considering moving him to LB, but decided to answer his request instead and released him.

Wow you're fast.
Anywho...doesn't matter.
I suspect he'll be cut during training camp.
Too many young guys to beat for a starting job, and too many savvy STer's to beat out for the backup jobs.

Not a bad signing, but I don't see him sticking.

I like this pick up, he's still got some juice left in the tank and Zimmer has always got the most out of him.
I think he makes the team and they'll put White on the PUP to start they year.
I also see them moving a saftey to cb.

I don't know what to expect with Roy, I am 100% rooting for him.
I know even if he isn't the athlete he was early in his career, if he plays with the passion he used to he can help any team.
Also he is only turning 29 Yrs.
Old most people probably would say early 30's if they did not know.

YESSSS! I love this signing and completely see him making the team.
He had his best years under Zimmer and I think he still has some left.
Zimmer will utilize him correctly.

I like it,Zimmer likes him so let's see what he can do in stripes....
Can't wait to have Hines come over the middle and Watch Roy & Rey get a taste of him.

My money is your wrong,Maybe during the season but I see them doing this to give white time to recover or even stash him on IR and keeping Roy on the roster for the full year...I just can't see them doing this for training camp fodder since he's a zimmer guy...

Alright Mike, work your Zimmer magic and make him return to his early form.

It's all about Mike Zimmer from this point on.
Roy Williams will definitely have a spot on this team.
He's a veteran and he's a good player.
Sure, he lacks in coverage skills but he's great in others.

Yup and they can always package around him..keep him on running downs put Ndukwe on passing downs @ SS...

Yeah sorry guys, still not buying the move.
Crocker and Ndukwe are the starters.
I don't see Crocker being moved to the bench, and i'd be furious if the has-been Roy moves Ndukwe to the bench.
Hebert and Lynch are special teams guy, with them doing spot duty on defense.
Unless Roy comes in and blows up the ST unit (which i don't believe he has ST experience, could be wrong), i don't see a spot for him.
Just like last year when Ahmad Brooks was booted.
If you can't play ST's and you're not a starter (or QB), your roster spot is in serious jeopardy.
Now, i could see them making one exception.
Keep him as a S/LB and concede that he doesn't play special teams...but he plays 20 snaps per game as a S/LB hybrid.
Blitz 50% of the time, drop into short zones the other 50%.
But at this point, i think it's a no go.

I have to agree with J here.
At safety I doubt he beats out any of the starters there, White and Lynch are the backup and Hebert is a special teams guy.
Unless Roy proves to be a beast on special teams I just cannot find a spot for him.
We have a few guys even at LB that I do not see him beating out.
I like the signing and want to see him make the team and make an impact, I just don't know where he would do it at.
Our defense definitely would get a physical boost with Williams and I like him, but I am just worried he wont find a spot for him

Rou used to be pretty fierce on specials, but when he lost his reckless abandonement he became invisible on specials.
I mean kickoff for specials he is definately not a "specials" guy, just a one trick pony.

I rather keep Roy Williams as a backup Linebacker/Safety than keeping some linebacker that hasn't proven anything.
Mike Zimmer knows how to use Roy Williams.
That's why he came here in the first place.
He said he took less money just to be back with Zimmer.
That says ALOT. Think about it!!
Somebody actually WANTS to be a Bengal.
This is definitely a good signing.
I don't see how this can hurt us.
We are finally bringing in some veteran, proven player to our defense.
I rather have us bringing in some player and try to do something about our defense than do nothing.

Yes because Zimmer would bring him in pick him up himself from the airport but he's being brought in as a special teamer at most you guys are silly like I don't think he's a lock maybe he'll light a fire under the other safety's asses but theres a reason zimmer is bringing him in...
