Weight Loss Can changing from alfafa to oxbow pellets cause quick weight loss? - Guinea Pig Cages, Care, Store, Photos of Guinea Pigs and More Forum!

Can changing from alfafa to oxbow pellets cause quick weight loss? Ok, Now my girl has lost 2.4 oz in 6 days.

Her 2 sisters on the same diet have stayed a stable weight.

I was hoping that rather than illness this loss might be caused by the switch from alfafa pellets to Oxbow cavy cuisine which I made almost 3 weeks ago.

Is this possible?

She gained heaps of weight on the alfafa pellets and definately needed to lose weight but this is a little too quick for my nerves.

She's eating well, very active and perky and there are no other signs of illness other than weight loss so far.

Anyone seen a similar case with their guineas?

Re: Can changing from alfafa to oxbow pellets cause quick weight loss? 2.4 oz in less then a week?

I would probably be going to the vet just to be on the safe side.

I changed my boys off of alfalfa and onto oxbow recently and didn't notice any weight loss, though mine are growing and their weight gain slowed a bit since they're not gorging on pellets now.

Re: Can changing from alfafa to oxbow pellets cause quick weight loss? Changing pellet brands should not cause weight loss that dramatic in a very short time.

A vet visit would be in order to rule out anything else going on.

Re: Can changing from alfafa to oxbow pellets cause quick weight loss? It is possible your piggie has a dental problem.A sudden weight loss over a few days is indicative of this.Does the piggy appear to be chewing more slowly or favouring softer foods.?. If it is a dental problem, make sure the vet can do the work without aneasthetic,.Some vets will insist on this, but it is not necessary and detrimental to the gp.
