The Jury Room • View topic - Ipod vs mp3
Help me decide on this, do I want an Ipod or an MP3 player?
I listen to music on burned CDs often, some of which is "borrowed" music, so getting mp3s would be much easier than starting over with Itunes.
I do however have a massive collection of cds available through friends, family, and a personal collection.
I'm told an Ipod is great for people like that because it's easy to transfer music to it from your CD collection.
What bonus features do Ipods offer to make them worth it over just simple mp3 players?

iPods play MP3s, so there's no "starting over" with iTunes.
Most of the 5,000ish songs I have on my iPod are in MP3 format.

This is true.
Ripping a CD into iTunes is indeed Barney simple.

Technologically?
None. Practically, though, ubiquity is a huge feature.
There are Apple proprietary and third party adapters available at a reasonable cost to do just about anything with an iPod.
Plug it into your car stereo through the data port.
Integrate it into an alarm clock.
Export its audio and video into your home theater system.
Recharge it off a AA battery.
More or less whatever.
It's this aftermarket expandability and adaptability that generic MP3 players lack.
If they're important to you, iPod's probably your best bet.
If not, you can likely save some money with a generic MP3 player.

My big problem with ipods and their ilk is having to use proprietary software like iTunes or soundstage.
I prefer just being able to load the player as though it were a virtual drive on the PC.
So when i do break down and get another player, it will probably be something like an iRiver.

I may be a sheep, but I really love my iPod and wouldn't consider an MP3.
First and foremost I work on an Apple computer, so iTunes and everything was pre-installed and I have been using it for years.
But regardless of the player you buy you'll need SOME kind of program to manage the music library effectively and nice to have a store attached to it when you want to legally buy a couple of tracks off an album you never want to purchase.
ITunes has the most comprehensive easy to use store.
Even if you never use it to buy music, you can get free samples of songs, television shows, and tons of other things that are worth tracking down.
Another thing I love about iTunes are the free Podcasts which are wide and varied and add a lot to my use of the device.
Without being on iTunes you just don't get much added value like that.
Sure, most podcasters have a home site.
But tracking all of them down and managing all that on your own is a pain.
ITunes does this very well.
Ask the Zune people about Podcasts and they will look at you cross-eyed.
Not many are available through them yet.
Accessories are easy to find and plentiful.
As Chris mentioned, you won't find more applications or after market items for any other player.
IPod pretty much has the most official and nonofficial add-ons and tweaks available for them.
If you want a case, or a car adapter you're better off joining us Pod people.

Exactly...
Plus, I don't think the Ohmibod attachement works on mp3 players and if you have an adventurous mate, it's just as entertaining as the music itself!!

Count me in on the iPod side.
Really, they're pretty simple to load, create a new playlist in iTunes, load up whatever you want on it, and drag it onto the iPod icon.
The true beauty of iTunes is that it will never duplicate a track and waste space, ie, if you load a Greatest Hits CD that only has 3 new songs, they're the only ones copied as the others are already present elsewhere.
That's a huge bonus for someone like me who creates lots of custom playlists for particular trips, etc.
Simple?
My brother figured his out with no help from me.

I agree iPod, or as I like to call it, my little white crackbox, is the greatest toy I have ever recieved.
It is simple, it is logical and and it is functional.
I have had mine just over two years and it does everything I have asked of it.
The only problem I have is I'm close to filling it up and am thinking about going for the 120g mother & starting all over again.

Of course now the question facing a potential iPod owner is which one...
You have the Touch which is like an iPhone without the cell phone part, and now just came out in a much more healthy 30GB model.
There's the video classic which offers huge GB configurations, video, but works on its own hard drive which means it is far more sensitive than the others that use that Flash drive.
The new Nanos have the smallest screen, but the resolution is amazing on them.
They also work the best in the gym or on the go.
You can't even go wrong with the video less Shuffle.
The sucker is built to last and is a cheap entry in to the crack world of iPod.

MP3 player user here.
The only software I have to use is MS Explorer, which is pretty standard these days on PCs
I'd never switch to iPod, largely because everyone I know who has one laments how they have 5000 songs but never listen to most of them.
I'm not anti-MAC, but paying for functionality you never use isn't a good use of $$.
Ironically, I guess I like it because it is so simple (which is the MAC rallying cry).
No software, no programs running in the background when iTunes isn't even being used, and no white headphones (blech).

I got an iPod 80g Classic for my birthday in December, I haven't played with it because I've been ripping CD's onto my computer ever since I got it.
An 80g is supposed to hold 20,000 songs;
A 160g is supposed to hold 40,000.
Our next film will be for the kiddies.
And we'll demonstrate a new, poison gas.

I'm pushing 12,000 songs on my iPod and I generally just keep it on schuffle.

I feel the same way about my Classic iPod.
Even though I have 1,000s of songs I don't listen to every day, it's nice to know on Shuffle mode I can still be pleasantly surprised with a song I forgot was on there.
The breadth of the collection makes it more intriguing and fun while driving down the road or listening on long patches of boredom.
It's nice to have that, and I don't look at it as functionality I never use.
Course if that bothers you the Shuffle model holds a very realistic amount of songs, and I keep a tight playlist on that one for the gym or podcast listening at bedtime.
My only gripe about both iPods and MP3 Players is they don't act like true external hard drives in that your music is 100% replicated both on the memory of your computer and your device.
I would love it if iTunes would keep an inventory of "titles only", and not have to use up computer hard drive memory.
I know it's a nice failsafe to have it in two places, but it annoys me a little.

Ditto everything you just said.
As a matter of fact, my wife and I now use the term "iPod band" to describe bands we never liked before or couldn't tolerate listening to in large doses but that we now find perfectly digestible when their tunes pop up now and again in shuffle mode.
U2 is an iPod band.
