The Qatar-based Arab TV channel’s eclectic internationalism—a feast of vivid, pathbreaking coverage from all continents—is a rebuke to the dire predictions about the end of foreign news as we know it.

Indeed, if Al Jazeera were more widely available in the United States—on nationwide cable, for example, instead of only on the Web and several satellite stations and local cable channels—it would eat steadily into the viewership of The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer.

Al Jazeera—not Lehrer—is what the internationally minded elite class really yearns for: a visually stunning, deeply reported description of developments in dozens upon dozens of countries simultaneously. Over just a few days in late May, when I actively monitored Al Jazeera (although I watched it almost every evening during a month in Sri Lanka), I was treated to penetrating portraits of Eritrean and Ethiopian involvement in the Somali war, of the struggle of Niger River rebels against the Nigerian government in the oil-rich south of the country, of the floods in Bangladesh, of problems with the South African economy, of the danger that desertification poses to Bedouin life in northern Sudan, of the environmental devastation around the Aral Sea, of Sikh violence in India after an attack on a temple in Austria, of foreign Islamic fighters in the southern Philippines, of microfinancing programs in Kenya, of rigged elections in South Ossetia, of human-rights demonstrations in Guatemala, and of much more.

Al Jazeera covered the election campaigns in Lebanon and Iran in more detail than anyone else, as well as the Somali war and the Pakistani a.

Since when did it matter that Al Jazeera has comprehensive coverage of more news events than American television news?

Nobody needs information besides the Arabness of the station.

Because American news outlets provide superior coverage outside of of our borders?

That's so funny.

Al Jazeera English is much improved lately.

They had good coverage of the Iranian unrest, which was the only reason I re-discovered them.

I was surprised how professional they seemed.

They've come a long way. However, I do not speak Arabic, and I suspect their Arabic language broadcasts are still heavily biased. BBC covers a lot of international news events, but for some reason it puts me too sleep.

BBC and Al Jazeera are two of the better international news outlets, IMHO.

Although Google is king. In the international business circles at my school those networks have the best street cred.

The American networks don't cover a lot of stuff.

Also consider that most of my classes look like the UN.

Lets all watch the propaganda arm of the terrorists for our enjoyment.

I'd rather not support rupert murdoch's empire.

(you did mean fox, right?)

I'd like to see more of them.

I liked the movie "Control Room." I doubt that many people who refer to them as AQ's media arm have actually looked at AJ.

I don't watch TV, but I hvae three news sites in my browser links.

BBC, ALJAZEERA and FOX.

Used to have CNN as well but our firewall blocks all the crap on their page so that they are practically unusuable from work. - Peter.

Ever listen to a BBC radio interviewer when they corner some government scoundrel on an issue .

. . verbal combat as only the English can do.

I won't watch Al Jazeera until they promise to provide round-the-clock coverage of boys (alledgedly) in balloons, and the aftermath.

Lol.

I'm sorry but I need to comment on this. It's unfortunate that it is like this, but the news isn't supposed to be entertainment.

It's supposed to provide informed data in a way that is as least unbiased as possible. I've stopped watching American TV news.

CNN and all of the other news channels pander to the lowest common denometer.

The international offices of CNN are much better in my honest opinion however. When I need news, NPR and the internet are my sources.

I'm there too. - Peter.
