Laser Eye Surgery - MBWorld.org Forums

So I went for a consultation in April to see if Laser Surgery was good for me.

Three places told me it was and one told me to wait.

The one place that told me to wait was the Laser Eye Center in Newport.

This is also the place which my parents and I both were most impressed with and we decided to get it done there.

Well, the doctor said I was a little to young for the procedure because my eyes still might change.

He wants me to wait till im 21 (March 2006) to make sure all is well.

The thing is, my contacts bug a lot and not only that, I have a really busy winter planned this year.

Going on a 7-day cruise during thanksgiving vacation, going to tahoe, colorado, mammoth, and utah for snowboarding. Basically what I'm getting to is, should I wait till March for the procedure or should I just get it done next month?

I don't want to be restained to contacts because once my eyes begin to hurt, thats the end of the night for me.

What do you guys think?

Does five months really make a difference?

BTW, my prescription hasn't changed in 2 years.

I got mine right after I turned 22 back in 99.

I was also told that I needed to wait until I were at least 21, because the prescription keeps on changing every 2 years or so.

I just waited an extra year to be on the safe side.

My brother just got his 10 days ago...

A day after he turned 22.

Good Luck.

I would wait. Just consider the alternative, and you'll see why.

Quote: : I would wait.

Just consider the alternative, and you'll see why.

What do you mean?

See what?

I'd listen to the docs and wait.

There's no rush. It's your eyes!

Plus after you get it done, you'll need some time to adjust to them.

Everyone is different.

It took me six months to get used to mine.

I had migraines and dryness.

Don't get fooled by people who tell you that you'll be perfect the next day.

It doesn't work like that.

Your eyes take time to heal.

As it heals, you'll see better and better.

Usually about 3-6 months before you settle in.

It's probably not good to go to extremely cold conditions also after surgery due to dryness, etc.

I'd wait. Also, go get more consultations.

I'd seen and heard too many horror stories with LEC.

Look for a place, not for the price, but one where quality counts more than quantity.

Where the docs own the facility and the laser.

Not where docs share the laser at a facility.

Also, check out the laser.

LEC uses a laser call the NIDEK, it's a old laser.

The one I used was the VISX PLUS.

It's newer than the NIDEK and that was 5 years ago when I had it done.

I've heard that today, there's even newer versions of that.

Check it out. WORD TO THE WISE: WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR EYES, DON'T GO CHEAP!!

Quote: : What do you mean?

See what? Base your decision on what happens to your eyes if you get it done too soon...

The only factor on your mind should be your overall health.

Forget about having a good time snowboarding, because if you take a gamble and it turns out wrong, you'll be MISERABLE.

So the alternative to waiting until March 06 is rolling the dice. Waiting means your vacation is not as much fun as you think it could be, but then again, is the same as what you're already used to.

There's no risk or negative outcome worse than that.

Doing it now can mean a better time on your vacation, but should it go wrong, it's even WORSE than not doing it, with other consequences your doctor can tell you about.

The LEC in Newport Quote: d me the highest price.

It is two doctors and one of them has all these awards in eye surgery.

They were also ranked 4 years in a row as the #1 place for Laser eye surgery.

The new technology they use is called wavefront tech.

I am not looking for the cheapest place but the most highly qualified, thats why I chose them.

Where did you go?

I was referring to the $495 per eye specials you hear on tv and radios for laser eye center.

I'd steer away from those.

I went to a place, it's been 5 years now-trying to recall, it's in woodland hills or thousand oaks-Dr.

Berg-I think he's the one who did Jessica Simpsons.

I paid $3500 back then.

I inquired about laser eye surgery about 7 years ago.

A good family friend is actually a well know glaucoma surgeon.

He told me to hold off until they continue to improve the technology and have a better grasp of the side effects.

He gave me the green light last year and I recently had my eyes done last April.

Like another member said, get various consultations and research on the creditials of the surgeons.

After you have your eyes done, you will have to wear goggles at night to prevent scratching the eye.

You cannot rub your eyes for 30 days as recommended.

Although I had 20/15 (better than the perfect 20/20) within a couple of days, I did notice a that the eyes blurred occasionally and then stablized back to 20/15 as of last week.

Cost was $4600, but luckily my family friend referred me to one of the top laser surgeons in the area.

Average seems to be around $3500 +/-.

You get what you pay for and it's certainly about quality and post op visits.

There are laser surgeons out there that you won't even meet them until the day of the surgery.

They have assistants who do the initial screening.

The are others who produce high quantity of surgeries, but might skimp out on the quality portion.

Your still young and your eyes will definitely change and might have to get your eyes redone later.

What is your eye sight?

Before my surgery it was -6 3/4 left eye and -7 1/4 right eye.

One common side effect is halos at night.

Basically, when driving and looking at rear lights of cars...the red lights will appear like a sun burst and depth perception become a little unclear.

Lemee get this straight.

You went for three opinions on an expensive elective medical procedure.

Two went straight for your wallet and said, "Do it now!" The third actually put off his greed to consider what is best for his prospective patient - even though he stood to make the most money as he charges the most of the three. And you are doubting that he actually has your best interests in mind when compared with the other two? If the contacts bother you that much, go to glasses.

Vanity is no reason to risk your eyesight for the rest of your life (of which you have the bulk in front of you). YMMV, EDJ

I would definitely wait.

My first instinct is to wait.

However, if your eyesight hasn't changed in 2 years, it may be ok.

Are you going to grad school or doing anything else in the near future that may cause strain on your eyes and cause your prescription to change?

If not, go ahead and do it.

WAIT! You're eye is still changing somewhat.

Your optician can tell you when you eye has stabilized and is then ready for surgery.

The TLC centers, while they are a franchise are quite good.

Several people in my office, ex-wife and son have all had it done at the one that is in Newport (Downey Building).

At the time they gave a life-time guarantee!

And as far as I am concerned, when it comes toyour eyes, there is no "cut rate deal" it is whatever is the BEST.

Yea get glasses if anything.

Do you have the accuvue advanced contacts?

My friend with those is always complaining about how they hurt at night

I would wait as well.

**** I have been waiting for a while.

I am nearsighted at -1.50 and they told me that there could be a risk of over correction.

So evaluate your options carefully.

I was considering getting Laser Eye suregery done a few months back;

However, my doctor advised me against it.

He said that I would still need glasses later on in my life and the prescription would most probably be worse than what I have right now.

Even the second doctor I went to told me that nearly all people who get laser eye surgery done right now, will get glasses at a later point in their lifetime. BTW im pretty blind -6.00 left eye, and -5.75 right eye.

Everyone's right, you should wait, if you have an active lifestyle like snow boarding or playing tennis or surfing..get some sport glasses if contacts bothers your eyes, or check out new contacts like accuvue advance.

Laser eyes sometimes works and sometime you have to have it corrected again later.

Its not permanent.

I know people who have had them done and some of them had to go back to get it corrected again or have to wear a light persription glass to drive at night.

I jusast goeat it adoene.

I kacan seqaee welkll noaiw!

In that case you'd better update that cartoon sig of yours.

It might have been a guy!

Just get it done on March with LASIK, basically wat they did is make a corneal flap and reshape the lens, 6 minutes procedure (they give me the video), the cornea will heal straight away.

Need to use eye drop for as long as u need it (every hour for the first day, 2 hours the next month or so, then as needed), as well as antibiotic drop and antiinflamatory.

Cannot rub the eyes for a week or so and avoid contact sport for a month.

You need to wear sunnies in day time as u may experience some glary vision.

In rare cases (like me) you'll notice some halo effect due to the unusually large pupil.

My vision is now better than 20/20, and it stay that way till now (my eyes perscription didn't change for the last 2 years, it helps) and if it does change the doctor will gladly do the procedure again for less cost.

My perscription before surgery was +1100 both eyes.

If u thinking of getting it in early future, please do not wear your contacts, it will irritate the cornea and you may have to wait longer for it to recover again.

All in all, i'm extremely happy with the procedure .

If u have small eyes (me being asian) the retainer will hurt u during the procedure :P.

The laser is cold too, u can feel it burn your lens in a cold way.

Thanks for the replies.

I dont wear acuvue advanced.

I do wear glasses occasionally and especially around the house.

My eyes dont usually hurt unless say I'm on vacation somewhere and continue to wear the contacts for a long period of time.

As for the LEC, I was Quote: d $3200 for both eyes.

If I do get the procedure done, I am not supposed to wear contacts for an entire month because it changes the shape of the cornea.

Damn guys, I made this thread to see if I should get it done next month or in March but now im considering waiting another year .

I guess if I do, its for the best.

They still do have the lifetime guarentee.

I am still in college and I have another year and a half left so I will be putting some strain on my eyes.

We can discuss this on Sunday if you wish, I had it done about 5 years ago.

I'm happy with it, FWIW.

Contacts hurt my eyes.

I had other reasons, in addition to vanity, for not wanting to wear glasses.

I got into too many fights.

Usually 2 a week or so.

Glasses became a safety (mine) issue. FWIW- EDJ
