How hot is too hot? - Overclockers Forums

How hot is too hot for HDDs?

I have a WHS that's running all the time and wonder what temp it's safe for the HDDs to hit before I need to worry.

Too hot is when the hard drive is warmer than the max specified operating temperature.

This is usually something like 55°-70°C.

^1+ Most desktop HDD have a max operating temp of 55c.

You can check with Speedfan.

My HDDs hang around 20c load and 15c load when my Antec 900 fans are on.

I reckon that's about what you shuold aim at.

For some reason I can't obtain my HDD temp ever since I went to a RAID array.

Never mind, Should be ok.

Their in a Coolermaster HAF

Well I managed to find this article that's a good read by google.

They say there is nothing relating HD temps to performance.

Considering how many HDs they probably use I trust them. http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf

What you have the AC on at full blast all the time?

Thats cold Typically if you have fans blowing over them considering roughly a 20C ambient temp, they stay in the range of 32-40C range, and into the mid 40's if you remove the fan from blowing on it, that can approach 50C on warm days. If it could hover around typical room temp 20C, then it would ideal but not a killer.

Most drives that I've used, or have seen are in the 30C range.

U touch if it burn its hot else is not hot

Hmmm...maybe i'm wrong then.

Maybe it's 15-20c idle temp sorry

My aaks sits around 33-36c on a daily basis, and thats with a super low cfm fan blowing on it on my cm 690, but compared to the antec 900 id guess theres a big difference in temps

Maybe it's 15-20c idle temp sorry Unless your HDDs are shutting themselves off and still reporting a temperature, there really should be no difference between 'idle' and 'load'.

It's not like a CPU...they spin all the time, the only difference is whether the arms are moving or not.

Any temp difference should be very minimal. Thanks a lot for that google link TD, I'm reading that now.

Makes me feel a bit better about my W/D that's approaching 50C with the impending summer. For reference, these are my normal temps in our main system: W/D 200G Caviar 16: 44C (running 49C recently in our hot 3rd floor office). W/D 500G Caviar 16: 38C Seagate Barracuda 40G: 36C Those are with an RC690 and the included (not so great) blue LED Coolermaster fan on full most of the time via a Rheobus Extreme.

Woudln't the temperature change if it's constantly transferring info? maybe i should ACTUALLY take a look at Speedfan, as i'm saying these numbers on the top of my head. ok well, i went ahead to start up HD Tune. before running the test it said 21c during the test it still said 21c. i got pics if you don't believe me so your'e right, there was no diff in temp during the benchmark.

Thanks EDIT: didn't know the pictures were so tiny!

Sorry. it seems low copmared to everybody else's HDDs, so i checked my other HD, and it hangs around 27c. my 27c HDD is directly above my 21c HDD, with a gap of ,1cm in between.

So it may have to do with placement.

My Antec Tri Led fans were also off during the screenshots.

Are you in a freezer to get those temps?
