Windows Explorer has encountered a problem... - Cyber Tech Help Support Forums
I'm running XP SP2, and a couple of clicks after I open Windows Explorer, I've been getting the following error message:
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." That one.
Strangely, I can just drag the error message out of the way and finish what I was doing.
When I do finally click on the message - Explorer closes.
I suspect a context menu problem or malware.
I've scanned with Avira and Spyware S&D.
I'm finding a lot on the web but nothing helpful.
The error signature that I receive is this:
Event Type: clr20r3 P1: explorer.exe P2: 6.0.2900.3156
P3: 466fc588 P4: mscorlib P5: 2.0.0.0 P6: 471ebc5b P7: 1107
P8: 51 P9: system.argumentexception
I'm hoping that someone here with more smarts than me can point me in the right direction and maybe save me a reinstall(!).
Does anyone know what this indicates?

What version of IE are you running?

I'm running IE 7.0.
I just did a restore to March 6 but no help.
Dang.

The reason I ask is I tried IE8 & was having the same problem so I went back to IE7 & the problem is gone..
IE8 is still buggie on my machine so I will wait a while before I try it again..
If IE7 is listed in add/remove programs try uninstalling it & you will go back to IE6..
Reboot & you can install IE7 again.
You have a corrupt Reg, key more than likely...

I uninstalled IE7 and rebooted back to IE6.
No luck, so I reinstalled IE7.
Still there. It was a good thought, though.
I think you're right about the reg.
Key. Guess I'll keep looking.
Thanks.

TRy running IE7 with no add-ons & see if you have the same problem.
Then try turning your phishing filter off if you have it running..

Sounded good. I just tried 'em both.
Still there, $*%^#&*@#!!
It feels like this might be the right track, but ....

Have you checked to make sure script debugging is turned off?
Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced:
Tick "Disable Script Debugging" Click OK.
If so & you have a windows cd try running SFC /Scannow from the Start/Run command..

Yup, script debugging's off.
It might be worth running the SFC again since I've done the restore.
I tried running it several days ago, but after a couple of hours it seemed like nothing was happening so I cancelled it.
(It was late - I mighta been a little cranky by then.) I'm not sure how long it should take to run.
Maybe I'll start it tonight.
Thanks for the idea.

It takes a while for SFC to run & it may ask for your windows cd & then again it may not if it can find any file it needs in your CAB folder on your PC..
You're right it's best to run it while you have about 4 hrs of TV to watch..

Ah, well. I finally got a chance to run SFC last night.
Put my CD in, started SFC and went to bed.
This morning I found a message that said it was the wrong CD.
It wanted XP SP2 .
Of course! But I have the original CD - I updated to SP2 with a download.
I should have thought of that.
This would certainly complicate a reinstall also.
I'll go bang my head on the wall now.

Beautiful. Thanks.
I'll get to it right after work.
Guess my evening is planned.

OK - I was able to slipstream the XP SP2 using the excellent instructions you directed me to.
For the actual burning, there were very clear instructions for Nero Burning ROM and for Roxio Easy CD Creator, neither of which I had.
I was able to find some instructions HERE , however, using the freeware IMGBurn.
A little blending of the two did the trick.
I ran the SFC scan overnight and checked it this morning.
No luck. The glitch is still there.
But I do have the shiny SP2 CD now, so I guess that's something...
I've gotta think it's either a context menu issue or some type of malware at this point.
Can't think what else it could be.
I'll keep pounding away.
I appreciate all the help.
I really thought we had it this time.

Just to put a cap on this, I think my Explorer problem is finally solved.
I did some frenzied cleanup of my context menus last night.
I'm not sure what all I wound up nuking, but it was merciless.
Today, I seem to be error free.
Wadda ya know.
I appreciate your hanging in with me.
Thanks.
