Spend 2-3 months reading, reading, reading at WHT to learn the business.
Create a business plan.
Find a quality web host.
Start with a reseller plan.
Create a killer web site.
Stay away from templates.
Install Help Desk/Billing scripts.
Attack local market first.
Address worldwide market later.
Plan on working 16-18 hours a day for a while.

Creating a business plan is a critical step so do not overlook it.
It will provide you with a map that you can follow as you build your business.
Jumping in blindly without checks and balances will not provide you with any insight as to how you are doing.
You need to have a reference point that will alert you if you go off track.
A business plan is your best friend.
Try reading up on business plans - eg., http://www.entrepreneur.com/businessplan/ .
There are so many online resources related to this topic.
Just do a bit of googling and you will soon find one that works for you.

I expected from a HostingGuru to offer some advice My would be stay away and get down to another, more lucrative business...
Unless you have a good plan how to establish your presence in local communities.

Does that include the regular extra job, to put money on the table?
If not, it looks like there's quite some funding required as well (which should go into that business plan you mentioned).
In any case, there have been hosts doing this hosting thing successfully in either variant, so it can be done.
Finding and contacting those who did it (as part of the "reading" step) might result in some really precious tips.

Yeah, a really big thing that needs to be identified is what money does a person plan on living off of?
You'll stiill have bills, meals, and other things you'll need to pay for.

Time, Time, Time...
Since I started back in 2008 all I did was dedicated time and time and even more time to it.
Running a webhost isn't easy.
Everyone here does it differently;
For me i'm the kind of guy who likes to learn for himself how to do everything and when I'm really stuck I ask for help.
The most important is finding the right reseller.
I used innostorm.net reseller for awhile mainly because The guy was super helpful in teaching me how to use WMH and allow custom plans.
Since then i've moved on to my own hosting it just took a lot of time.
You gotta find the right one and luckly for you this lovely forum has so many reviews for sites it shouldnt be to hard to figure it out.
Be confident in what your doing, there is a lot of competition out there but don't let it get to you.
Make sure your company and plans are stable, its all about carving that niche out of the market for yourself.
Plan, I remember I bought a white board and just wrote all my ideas on it for hosting (I was a dreamer) on it.
Barely 1/3 of them actually happened but at least I had something to hold my idea's on.
You'll find that the first 3 weeks will be dedicated to SEO and getting the word out there.
I spent about +56 hours my first week to just ads and it paid off because the next week I have over 400 hits.
It takes a lot of effort but the pay out can be worth it Xp Cheers

Strategies, ideas, expenses, profit margins, expansion plans, marketing plans, niche market, guarantees and promises to clients all rolled into one is the overall business plan.
Ultimately, all the things above have one role.
To make sure the business is profitable.
What kind of strategies you want to utilise.
Market to local? Go for global?
Use adwords? flyers?
Target individuals?
Small Businesses?
What kind of expenses do you foresee?
Server Rental? Reseller account monthly payments?
Staff salary?
How much profit you intend to make minimum per sale after excluding your expenses?
Identify a niche market.
What do you intend to promise the client?
24x7 support? Phone support?
Good customer service?
Low prices with reliable servers?
When you have this in mind, login to WHT and read up as much as you can on threads.
Do a search. If you can't find what you are looking for, then post a new thread.
The community here is more than willing to help you out.

Best to have hosting as an option or an addition to your business...
But not as a primary source.
The industry is really saturated..
And it's who you know, not what you do in my opinion.

I beg to differ. Even if you know the owners of 1000 companies in your area, and you provide bad service, you still can't go far.
To me, the industry is competitive and not saturated.
Ultimately with any business, it is how you DO and Conduct your business that's important.
Who you know comes secondary.
If it's because who you know you are successful, that's as good as me giving an example by saying you make it because your dad's business associates support your business.
But that's not what happen with most successful companies and businesses.
So please please change that limiting mindset of yours.
