vents blowing hot air - TDIClub Forums
My 2000 golf tdi is blowing hot air out the vents even when the fan is 'off'.
When i turn on the fan it blows more hot air in the cold position and in the hot position.
The hot/cold lever seems normal and is not hanging or dragging when I turn it.
When i turn on the a.c.
It blows hot air.
Any ideas on what could be the problem?

First thing I would do is check fuses After that I would try to figure out if the flap that regulates air temp moves.
Perhaps the actuator that moves it came unhooked or failed.
Do you have a Bentleys manual?

No I don't have a Bentley's Guide.
Which fuse should I be looking for?
The fan?

Check fuses 5,16,25 above the driver's footwell.
Check the center metal fuse, and the inboard plastic fuse above the battery.
Verify that when you start the car, and select AC and select a cabin fan speed, that the AC button lights up, BOTH radiator fans run, the cabin fan runs, and the clutch on the AC compressor latches.
(center part seen from standing out on the right side of the car turns.)
While I do some homework.

Can you hear the temperature flap reach the ends of its travel?
If your complaint is "The air coming out of the duct is always very hot after the car warms up, much hotter than ambient air, no matter what temperature it is set on", then it sounds as if the cable has come loose from the temperature control flap.
Probably on the flap end of the cable, since you say the resistance is normal.
You need to verify the cable is still hooked up.
It is connected on the back of control knob and on the flap.
The adjustment is on the flap end.

Or the bowden cable came out of its retaining clip.
Disassembly of the lower instrument panel trim is required.

Or a mouse chewed through the foam in the blend doors and now you big holes showing.

When my '02 NB TDI did this last fall, it was because a small part in the air blend door mechanism failed, leaving the hot air supply on at all times.
I was told I'd need a whole new heater assembly installed for about a grand, but another shop found a fresh TSB on the problem.
Nw VW is selling the failed widget for about $100, and the total repair cost me about $250.
It's working fine now.

Taos...happend to me too and I found out the vent directional flap was broken.
I became very flexible in my body, removed the part and fixed it with JB Weld.
It cost a few pennies to fix.
Good luck!
btw...the hot-cold controller seemed fine and the cable was intact...only when I got deep down did I see the broken plastic piece.

I just took all the trim out and found the same thing that you are talking about.
Did you have to take out the entire distribution assembly or did you repair it in place?
I can't get close enough yet to see how to repair it, but gave up when it got too dark to see.
