Are you man who dreamt of being a butterfly; or a butterfly who dreamt he was a man? - Yahoo! Answers

This is not a question but an idea to be examined. This sort of "question" is actually a puzzle with two possible solutions.

This is referred to in Buddhism as a koan.

First, I must construct all the possible assumptions needed o express the idea that I am a man who dreamt of being a butterfly.

Then I must construct all the possible assumptions needed to express the idea that I am a butterfly who dreamt of being a man. From the practical point of view I can only assume that I am a man who dreamt of being a butterfly.

I know from experience that I dream.

I do not know that this is true for the butterfly.

If I dreamt of being a butterfly I would, by definition, still be me in mind.

The container is changed but the content remains the same.

If, on the other hand, all things dream and that they dream the same way as I then, they would be subject to the same limitations as am I when I dream of being them.

This, too, means that, again by definition, they would still be themselves.

Different container, same contents.

I'm a Bullet With Butterfly Wings... The world is a vampire. Nah nah nah nah nah nah.

Have you been watching "Kung-Fu" reruns again?

I am but a caterpillar waiting to form my cocoon.

Butterflies can't dream.
