Apple - Support - Discussions - ipod not recognized by iTunes 9 ...
I'm having the same issue with my 60GB 5g described by folks with Classic models:
iTunes starts on iPod connection iPod shows up on desktop iPod never shows up in iTunes iTunes hangs with spinning beachball of death, requiring Force Quit
No combination of pre-re-booting iPod or Mac makes a difference
OS X 10.6.1, iTunes 9.0.1, iPod 1.2
Cheers,
Richard

I'm also having a similar issue.
I have a 30Gb ipod video (5th gen.) that the hard drive recently crashed in (after i lent it to a friend of course).
I replaced the hard drive with a 8Gb Compact flash card and the iflash adapter ( http://www.tarkan.info/20080115/tutorials/iflash-ipod-compact-flash-mk2 ).
Which by the way works awesome.
Anyway, my ipod shows up in finder and itunes pops up but the ipod is never shown in itunes.
I originally thought that it was the flash conversion but then i tried connecting ipod to my Imac (which luckily still has itunes 8 since you cant downgrade itunes as far as i know) and it worked perfectly.
I tried every possible type of reboot, restart and restore and it still doesn't work....
I told apple that same thing in a feedback message but doesnt look like they changed much in 9.0.1.
APPLE CAN YOU PLEASE FIX ITUNES 9!!!

What happens if you first force the iPod into Disk mode then connect it to your computer?

Over the weekend I finally waited it out and ultimately (hour+) iTunes recognized the iPod.
At that point I did a restore and then a full sync (many more hours...).
When I disconnected and reconnected the symptom remained the same: ipod appears near-instantly on the desktop but not in iTunes.
(At the moment it has been connected for 30+ minutes and still hasn't shown up in iTunes.)
So something is damaged-but-not-completely-broken in the mechanism iTunes uses to detect the iPod.
Activity Monitor suggests "iTunes (Not Responding)" but it is taking tiny time slices of CPU (0.01-0.11%) and looking at the thread activity sample shows one is sitting in
IsiPodRegisteredForSync
This code must be flaky w.r.t.
5G and Classic.
And finally the iPod showed up, 35+ minutes after connection.
The sync itself was near instantaneous (just a few podcasts to sync).
I'll proclaim the situation "working but nearly unusable."
Cheers,
Richard

Have you tried a different USB sync cable?

An example of where the iPod sort of worked, took a LONG time to do stuff and it turned out to be a bad cable...

Nice to know that others have the same problem.
I've got a macbook running 10.5.x and iTunes 9.01 and these symptoms do not occur.
I think there might be a conflict between 10.6.x and iTunes.

Thanks, Patrick, that was a reasonable suggestion.
However, it made no difference: same symptoms.

As soon as it opens I get the pinwheel of doom.
My ipod sometimes shows up in itunes right away but with no response other times no ipod.
I reinstalled itunes - no help.
I have tried three different usb cords - no help.
Reset my ipod - no help.
Please help!

I just bought my wife a new 16 GB Video Nano (PC075LL/A).
I am running Mac OS X 10.6.1 with iTunes 9.0.1.
When I hook up the new Nano to my Mac, I see the disk icon appear on the Desktop, iTunes is launched, then almost immediately, iTunes has a spinning beach ball that doesn't appear to ever go away.
I have to Force Quit iTunes.
I have tried also starting iTunes first before I connect the Nano, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
As soon as iTunes starts I immediately get the spinning beach ball.
I just tried another test which was to connect my iPhone to the same Mac and version of iTunes.
Everything seemed to be ok until I clicked on the iPhone to eject it.
Then I got the spinning beach ball.
I also connected my older Nano.
Before it launched iTunes I was able to view the folders & files in Finder.
However, after iTunes was launched, it hung with the spinning beach ball.
Any ideas of how to resolve this problem?

The kid got a new 24-inch iMac for his birthday today.
His Mom bought him a new iPod nano (video camera).
Brand new stuff. Latest software and hardware.
When we plug the Nano into the iMac, iTunes gets the beachball of death.
The iPod disk displays in Finder, but iTunes doesn't seem to recognize it.
Have tried switching cables, different order to launching iTunes, turning the Nano off and on, removing plist files.
Any other ideas? Talk about disappointing a 16-year-old on his birthday!
