Apple - Support - Discussions - iChat and aol rate limiting/multiple ...
This happens to me just about every time I use my iChat.
I have an aol screenname that I use with iChat.
I can sign on and folks can contact me.
But the moment I start a conversation with someone, iChat disconnects.
And then I am unable to reconnect.
When I try it says it's unable to connect.
When I go to AIM Express, outside of iChat, and try to sign on, it says I have to wait, that I have tried to sign on too many times.
It used to say that I was "rate limited" but I think they've changed the language.
I then have to wait a very long time before I can sign on again.
When I do, it usually works for a bit.
But what also can happen is I can get an error message that says that I was attempting to use my aol account on a computer that does not support multiple logins (or something like that).
Now what can also happen to me is AOL can decide that something must be wrong with my account, that someone must be trying to access it illegally or something.
So it kills my password, making it impossible for me to sign back in to either chat or even check my email.
The only way I can fix this is to reset my password.
In the past couple of months, I have had to change my password 8 times.
I am not using my account wrong or illegally in any way.
I'm just simply wanting to chat and videoconference on occasion.
Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on?
I am of course not able to ask AOL because they don't offer support to anyone who has a free account and I am not about to pay AOL for an account that is screwing up like this.
Is there any way to use iChat without making use of the AOL network?
One guess as to what may be causing these problems: I use mac's Mail program to access my AOL mail.
Is that considered a second connection to my account?
I've experimented with turning off Mail before using iChat but that doesn't seem to help.
I have no other ideas.
On many occasions I have searched the forums and the internet for a clue as to what might be happening, but I can't find anything.
Please help!!!!

Hi,
In iChat menu >
Preferences > Account you can set iChat to allow Multiple Logins.
(iChat and AIM Express would be two logins )
In iChat Preferences >
General Section ids the option to have the Menu Bar iCon showing
This has a sub line about "When I Quit iChat, Set my Status as Off Line"
This means in fact even if you have Quit iChat it does not always log out fully from the AIM servers (it's connected to Off Line Messaging).
Try the following.
1) Set iChat to be Off line when Quit.
2) In the Accounts Pane >
Server setting change the port to 443 (from 5190) whilst you are logged out.
3) Also try it with and without the SSL option in iChat 4
4) If this does not work go to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.icaht.AIM.plist and restart iChat

Thanks for your assistance.
My preferences have been set for Multiple Logins.
And while I did not prefer to have my iChat status in my menu bar, the checkmark was there for setting my status to off line.
I tried adding turning on the menu bar status indicator just to make sure this checkbox is recognized.
We'll see if that makes any difference.
So far, no. My server setting had been set to 443 - I heard about that some time ago, but it never made any difference.
I never tried setting the SSL option, so I will try that and see what happens.
And finally, I could not find a file called com.apple.ichat...
Anywhere on my harddrive.
I'll try looking for something that has AIM or iChat in the title.
But I know I have never tried deleting the preferences file for iChat before.

Strange - I must not be very good at using Spotlight or understanding Mac folder structure (though I've been a mac user for two years now...) cause I was able to find files and folders that have com.apple.ichat in the name by manually searching.
I found the preferences file you mentioned and deleted it and tried restarting iChat.
No luck, but then I think the AIM server just has me blocked out.
It's frustrating cause these days it seems it takes even longer to get back in - at least a half hour.
Which of course has me thinking it's an AOL issue, not something on my Mac.
As a side note, it's interesting that if I go to Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences, I see lots of preference files but not the one you mentioned.
Then I noticed that I could instead go to paulold\LIbrary\Preferences and there was the file.
So I have more than one folder called Library.
But there's only me on my laptop.
Why can't it all just be in one place?
I won't be setting up anybody else to use my computer...

Hi,
Yes Spotlight does not search System or Library or your Home Folder/Library.
(Nor does Find in the Finder's File Menu)
The Differences in the Libraries (There are three in Total on a one User computer) are whether any preference is System Wide or User wide or User Only.
So Say Network Preferences (System Preferences >
Network) will be stored in the System Wide area (System/Library) as they are how the computer regardless of User Connects to the Internet.
Fonts are similar, having those the System needs, those shared by everyone and any you may have installed just for you.
Have you deleted the said .plist ?

Thanks for the explanation.
Makes sense.
I did try deleting the preferences file.
It of course didn't have an immediate impact since I was already booted off the AIM server.
I just signed on now and didn't have any trouble starting up conversations.
So maybe it's happy now - we shall see.
One other thing is, which to me suggests I'm not in the clear just yet, is every time I send an IM to someone, I get this error message after a moment that says "An AIM service error occurred.
Error: Serv:RequestTimeout".
Happens with every message.
I have to click ok before I can do something else.
Strange thing is, the messages are getting thru.
Not sure what is timing out.

Well, last night I gave it another go.
Logged onto iChat and was able to chat away without any problems.
I still got the annoying timeout error message every time I sent a message but I could also hear (via videoconference) that the people I was chatting with were also getting those same messages.
It's pretty annoying cause you get one for every line you send.
But, it was working without booting me out!
I thought - it's fixed!
And I was about to write you a big thank you.
But then I tried it again this morning and it's back to booting me out.
I sent just one message and it disconnected me.
I just don't get it.

Why did Apple choose the AOL network to run its iChat???
At the time back at iChat 2 the choices were MSN or AOL.
Jabber didn't and for the most part does not do Video or even Audio chats.
Yahoo does not really do even full on Video chat (with Audio) even now.
IS port 5190 allowed in your routing device ?
If so is it open to the UDP Protocol ?
iChat uses port 5190 on the TCP Protocol to Login and do certain text chats.
Although this port can be changed in iChat as I suggested earlier.
iChat also needs port 5190 on the UDP Protocol.
It uses this for Direct Chats (which can have the Pics in chats and Files in chats) as well as some Buddy List Feedback info.
IF the router or routing modem use UPnP then all should be well.
On some devices that use Port Forwarding you have to specify the Protocol and UDP may well need to be stated.
Some Modems and routers don't like the fact port 5190 need "Forwarding" twice which is another reason for changing the port in iChat.
Apple points out this for Netgears But is a lot more important for Zyxel modems.
If you are using a routing modem and a router there may be other issues.

Those are some interesting questions.
Never thought about my router being an issue.
I'm not really sure how to check this.
My router is my Time Capsule.
Are you saying I should switch my iChat back to 5190?
I have it set to 443 in my iChat preferences.
Does this number appear somewhere in my Time Capsule settings?
Does it need to match - 443 in both iChat and the Time Capsule?
Sorry - this last bit of advice is going over my head a little.
Oh and I think it's getting even worse when I get booted off and can't log back in.
It took me about a day this time before I could get iChat to connect this morning.
And last night when I tried, I saw a different error message - this time it said there was a problem with the AIM network.
I don't recall the exact wording - I'll have to capture it next time.
So, do I have ANY other alternatives to supply iChat with a network that will allow me to chat and videoconference?
I also have Skype and Yahoo, which work okay.
But I would prefer to use iChat since you can resize the video window.
Should I try deleting all of the preference files for iChat?
Not just the one mentioned earlier?

Hi,
USe Airport Utility to log on to the Airport using the Manuall set up option as this allows you to Edit the settings
Go to the Internet icon and then NAT tab
Make sure Port Mapping Protocol is enabled as this is the Apple equivalent of UPnP on other routers.
You do not need to list any ports.
Hold off on the .plists for the moment.
