Apple - Support - Discussions - Unable to send mail via AOL ...
Starting this afternoon, I have been unable to send out emails from my AOL accounts.
I have no problem receiving emails.
I am also able to send email out from my gmail and yahoo accounts.
I get an error message "the connection to the outgoing server smtp.aol.com failed".
I also have the AT&T SMTP server turned on as a secondary outgoing server, but the emails just remain in my outbox.
I even powered down the phone and restarted it.
I know it's not the server because I can send emails from my iMac without a problem.
I have not changed any mail settings on the phone since I set it up over a year ago.
I'm located in San Francisco, CA on the Edge/3G connection (no WiFi).
Any thoughts? Could it be an AT&T network issue?

I removed the account and then added it again by selecting AOL as the account type and by manually adding the with the correct settings given by the AOL mail website and still no luck.
Same thing, able to retreive email but cannot send

I'm having the same problem with my POP3 mail account (not AOL).
Everything was fine until tonight .
. . now, I can't send mail.
Tried turning the mail account off and back on.
Nothing.
Every time I try to send an email, it says "doesn't recognize the recipient's email address" and gets into a loop and keeps trying to send it.
very frustrating.

I am also having the same problem in the San Diego area.
The only way I can send email from aol is to use WiFi.
Maybe it's a network issue.

I talked with AT&T support at about 1030 PDT and they ran a diagnostic on the network and found nothing wrong in California.
Since it's only on the outgoing side for AOL (my gmail account works fine), the rep suggested that it may be an Apple and/or AOL issue.
I have not been able to find out anything from the AOL side yet.
Does anyone know how the iPhone sends out email (non-WiFi)?
Does it go out to the AT&T service and then to an Apple server to connect to the smtp.aol.com?
Trying to get an idea where to next attack this issue.

It's not just California.
Us east coasters are having the same troubles.
Can receive ok, can't send email.
I've hard booted, soft booted, deleted the accounts, I've recreated new smtp addresses with different ports ranging from 25 to 993;
Nothing works. It's really frustrating!
The darn email worked fine at 0630 ET on 8/21 but sometime between then and 1800 ET it stopped functioning.

At 8:30pm est, I was able to send myself 2 test messages from my AOL account, but I could not send emails to anyone else - AOL or otherwise.
About 30 mnts later, I couldn't send to anyone from the AOL account, and this morning I can't even send via gmail.
Hoping someone figures this out asap!

Can you explain how to send out AOL mail via WiFi?
I went into Settings and turned on my WiFi and also into Mail and turned on all of the outgoing SMTPs, but still can't send.

Same problem as everyone else.
Started late afternoon where i couldnt send emails.
Now after deleting and re-creating my acct i cant even access my inbox.
At first it was saying i had -11 emails and every time i deleted an email on my pc the negative number would increase.
So i sent myself 15 "dummy" emails so that i could get to at least 1 email in my inbox instead of a neagtive number.
Didnt work. i can access sent mail,draft,trash, just not my inbox.
I tried my other aol acct and while i cant send out on that one either, i could at least access my inbox.
The problem is the one i cant access is my main acct.
anyone else have a similar problem?
