Seen a good movie lately? - Entertainment - Arts & Entertainment - Ditto - Message Board - Yuku

I thought I'd make this tread for when one of us has seen a movie and would like to review it.

I'll kick off I guess. First film reviewed. I'll start by saying that I just finished watching this with Carolyn and add to that comment, that we were both in tears several times. It's difficult to classify this movie, it's not for children under 10 that's for sure.

Yet it's marketing campaign at the time would have led you to believe that it was a simple childrens fantasy movie.

It's anything but. More of a coming of age movie.

The central character of the movie Jessie is in a very bad situation.

His home life isn't the best and his school life isn't much better.

A new neighbour Leslie moves in next door to him and is really his soul mate.

She's one of the most beautiful characters I've seen in movie.

A true beautiful person and for me the driving force of the movie. It's a very difficult movie to put into words and do it the justice it deserves.

The few scenes that do take place inside the childrens imagination are brilliant.

And also thought provoking.

And are especially moving in the last quarter of the film. The star of the movie is undoubtedly Anna Sophia Robb as Leslie.

I also liked Robert Patrick who played Jessie's father.

Leslie is the friend that everyone would want to have.

She's just a beautiful person. I really don't want to give that much away.

Only that the movie is more than likely to be not something that you are expecting.

And I can say that I don't normally cry in movies.

In fact I've cried in about 3 that I can think of including this one. It is similar to Pans Labyrinth in a few regards.

The children do escape into fantasy worlds to get away from troubled home situations.

Although this movie is not as fatalistic as say Pans Labyrinth. Essentially Bridge To Terabithia is a story of hope.

Much like Shawshank Redemption. Four and a half stars out of Five.

My only regret is that I didn't see this gem at the cinema. Will be reading the book for sure.

Another surprise is that I haven't read the book!

I love surprises and this was a brilliant one.

Nikki I think you'll love it! CerydynsMoon Seen a good movie lately?

Gallipoli from a place you've never heard of...a story you'll never forget. Gallipoli was made in 1981 (ancient LOL) and launched the international careers of the director Peter Weir and Mel Gibson.

Set in 1915 in Western Australia it traces the journey of two characters Archie Hamilton (Mark Lee) and Frank Dunne (Mel Gibson). Historical context of the time was that Australia was putting together an expeditionary force for help the British during World War One.

Young men were eager to join up as they believed it would be a wonderful adventure and a chance to do their bit for England.

Young Archie falls into this camp.

Frank on the other hand simply goes along for the ride, but also because of his strong friendship with Archie. The characters meet at a race meeting in Western Australia.

Archie is shown to be a brilliant athlete who if he continues with his athletic career will rival the great Harry De-Salle.

Archie forgoes this career as he want's to do his bit and be involved with the war. You trace the men from Outback Western Australia, to Perth, Egypt and eventually Gallipoli.

There are some great scenes with Mel attempting to sign up with the Light Horse.

Which was an elite Australian regiment.

You needed to be able to be a skilled rider, something Archie is and something Frank isn't.

Frank eventually signs up with the Infantry and meets up with some old friends in Perth who he signs up with. Both Mel Gibson and Mark Lee are superb in this movie.

Mel went onto international stardom.

But it's really Mark Lee's movie.

He is more the central character and the character that the viewer feels the most empathy for. Bill Hunter who plays Major Barton I believe is based on the actual commander of one of the 8th Light Horse, Alexander White.

He chose to lead his men into battle at the Nek at the cost of his own life.

He was an extraordinarily brave man. There are some scenes towards the end of the film that are not historically accurate.

The British did not order the attacks at The Nek on the date here, Australians were in charge of the entire operation.

Although some Australian officers and troops did speak with English accents as they were originally born in England and moved to Australia as adults. I wouldn't necessarily describe Gallipoli as an Anti War movie, It's does focus on the futility of war.

Mainly it's about courage, friendship, and standing up for what one believes.

Good messages. A fine book to read after seeing the film is Goodbye Cobber God Bless You which looks into the formation of the Victorian and Western Australian Light Horse divisions who took part in the 'battle', slaughter is more like it at the Nek. This movies message doesn't date and is one out of three movies that has moved me to tears.

Powerful and meaningful.

This film is absolutely heart rendering.

The last scenes are amoung the the most powerful you'll witness. Gallipoli Trailer Four and a half out of Five. "Keep Your Mind Wide Open" birminghamstar Re: Seen a good movie lately?

I saw I am Legend on Boxing Day, a good film with lots of action and zombies flagged a little towards the end but Will Smith acted marvellously but the star of the show was the dog Dead Monky Re: Seen a good movie lately?

I just watched Visitor Q.

A thoroughly twisted and taboo breaking movie about a man who suddenly shows up in the lives of a dysfunctional family and, through the chaos and surrealy disturbing events he seems to bring, changes them into better people. And I watched Planet Terror, again.

I love that movie.

It's got gross zombies, excessive gore and violence, over the top action, and a stripper...er, go-go dancer with a machine for a leg.

What's not to love? Abasdarhon Re: Seen a good movie lately?

Was really let down a bit by I Am Legend.

The CGI was really bad, seemed cheap with those Darkwalkers (or whatever their name was). Loved Will Smith in it though.

Would have been almost a better film if it'd just focused on Will's character.

His isolation and attempts to find a cure.

They should have spend a little more on the CGI process.

Found the first half of the film was very good until those creatures appeared. Still wasn't a bad film.

But I think people who really love the book will be disappointed.

I've just watched Bridge to Terabithia and I completely agree with Caitlyn's review.

I wept at some parts.

This is maybe one of the most devistating films I have ever watched.

The only other film that has affected me like this one was Ladder 49.

I completely reccomend this film but suggest that you have tissues ready. Abasdarhon Re: Seen a good movie lately?

Glad you watched it Nikki.

I watched it with Mum and Dad last week and mum was really upset.

One scene in particular really got to me more than it did on the first viewing because I knew what was coming next. "I'm not small....I'm fun sized" MAXINE A Re: Seen a good movie lately?

Atonement, last night.

Good, but not as great as it's been touted to be. Abasdarhon Re: Seen a good movie lately?

One of my favourite shots in Atonement was that scene at Dunkirk.

It seemed like one continuous take.

And the performance of Saoirse Ronan as young Briony was also a highlight for me.

That girl was brilliant. "I'm not small....I'm fun sized" Sunny Seabreeze Re: Seen a good movie lately?

The little girl was very good.

The scene at Dunkirk, both Mr.

Sunny and I felt, was overdone.

As was the entire middle third of the movie.

There needed to be much more of them as a couple to really tug at heartstrings.

And the rest of the characters were completely undeveloped.

So much more could've been made of the caste system, and wasn't. Abasdarhon Re: Seen a good movie lately?

Saw Juno last night.

Love this movie. Will post a decent review of it tomorrow (hopefully!). Abasdarhon Re: Seen a good movie lately?

Was going to talk about Juno.

But I'm not. teehee. Left Oatley early last night with Larry and watched a DVD called 'Once'. Once is a really beautiful movie.

Best movie about music that I've seen.

And that's saying something. Once is the story about a busker in Dublin (more brownie points as Dublin is such a great city, had fun spotting a few landmarks that I remembered) who has a chance meeting with a very young girl from the Czech Republic who happens to be a very talented Piano player. lol you can see why I love this movie! The two of them decide to record a demo tape of songs that they have both composed. There isn't really a love story between the characters which I found really refreshing.

The guy does make some moves but is rebuffed by the girl who is married (they are having some 'problems' her husband is living in the Czech Republic).

They are just friends and I loved that.

I did think that she had some romantic feelings for the guy but doesn't carry though with them. The songs featured in the movie are on the surface very lyrically simple.

But when I read some of the lyrics on line and pondered them....wow....very moving.

Most of them are very painful actually, all to do pretty much with broken relationships. I adore the song Falling Slowly.

Plan to be able to play the song on my guitar by the end of the day!

It's so good! Actually listening to it now as I write this.

Larry and I would do a great cover version of it! The film was obviously filmed on a very low budget that really adds to the story.

It's like looking in on the lives of two people for short time in their lives.

Lots of hand held camera work.

Really does add to the authentic nature of the movie. The leads in the film are played by Glen Hansard and Witold Owski both are musicans.

Glen is lead singer of Irish band The Frames.

Both are credited as playing 'Guy' and 'Girl' in the movie which I found hilarious as the movie was coming to the end I asked Larry, what are their names??

We both laughed at the credits. Falling Slowly has been nominated for best original song at the Academy Awards and will hopefully win.

I loved Enchanted but this movie was so real. See it and enjoy it. Once Trailer Falling Slowly Lyrics. But I want you All the more for that Words fall through me And always fool me And I can't react And games that never amount To more than they're meant Will play themselves out Take this sinking boat and point it home We've still got time Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice You've made it now Falling slowly, eyes that know me And I can't go back Moods that take me and erase me And I'm painted black You have suffered enough And warred with yourself It's time that you won Take this sinking boat and point it home We've still got time Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice You've made it now Take this sinking boat and point it home We've still got time Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice You've made it now Falling slowly sing your melody I'll sing along MAXINE A #15 [-] Posts : 1855 ( 1 Mar, 2008 2:41 PM) My Fair Lady

I saw Shutter the original Thai version, it did make me jump out of my skin a fair few times but still only average imo.

Good creepy ending though. ophelia28 #19 [-] Posts : 64 (19 Mar, 2008 11:50 AM) Ardent Anglophile Moderator
