The biggest advantage is that the network printer is always on and connected. If you connect a usb cable to the printer and the PC next to it and share that, the computer has to be on for another computer on your network to print. It really depends on how much that other computer is used, and if you care about leaving it on all the time. Although a switch is a simple idea, there are wireless printers out there and even a wireless bridge should work too. source

Did you try going to Devices and Printers and adding a network printer? Windows should install the drivers automatically. I have an old HP Deskjet 3930 connected to an XP Home machine that I did that with on Windows 7 32-bit. If Windows can't find 64-bit drivers on your XP machine, it should download them from Windows Update. You could always update the drivers with what you have after the wizard finishes. source

Try installing the Windows XP driver and see if it actually works. It probably won't be very accommodating, but you might get lucky. source
