How much strain does it put on the pump to have to pull fuel from the tank all the way to the front of the engine? With a fass or airdog the pump only has to pull fuel a few inches before it's pressurized and sent to the engine but having the mechanical...

Fuel cell in the bed with -12 feeding to a "y" block... .
This usually also means the fuel pickup is a bung in the bottom from the pump to the regulator, wit ha AN-6 or AN-8 return line I use a waterman on my puller.
Gravity is feeding the pump.

Apparently a local scrapyard has a 1.9TD T4 van in like mine, and I thought of going to grab the injection pump out of it just to have as a spare. I don't actually need it, so CBA if it's going to need lots of fecking about and / or special diesel locking...

No need to have cam cover off either, that is just for setting the timing... .
20 mins should have it off.
Easy enough to remove injection pump.
The only extra I needed was a puller much.
I got a 1Z injection pump off easily, for the same reason.

One way to help increase supply, especially in the early days, is to power or cluster pump. Rather than your normal "pump til the breast is empty then wait a few hours", power pumping means you will be at the pump for an hour or longer, pumping between...

I assume by Pumptec, you mean a Franklin motor protector and that you don't say what pump you have. If the pump is barely capable of lifting water 600 feet and make pressure as well, it could dead-head when the water level drops. I don't know how well...

You are correct about the Pumptec being the Franklin motor protector, but I have no information on the pump itself, so I can't help years in.
From the dead-head condition other than replacing the pump.

What the hell? I Lost PS and brakes Saturday night, got the truck home and pulled the pump today, i picked up a reman PS pump and figured straight forward swap and back on the road. Nope!!

The pawls on the PS pump are pretty worn which makes me think they actually worn down to find an replacement for....
