I'm attempting to follow the celery tutorial , but I run into a problem when I run python manage.py celeryd : my RabbitMQ server (installed on a virtual machine on my dev box) won't let my user login.

I suspect that on Solaris.
The "Connection refused" message is what you'll receive when there is no process listening on your will see the same connection refused exception as you get on Solaris/HP-UX.

We're seeing ConnectException with message "Connection refused" sporadically appearing at times when connecting to our Tomcat server. Could these be caused by long GC cycles?
(We're activating up the relevant JVM flags to get more log messages on GC cycles...

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly: Do you have both the server side and the client side in the same process? Then you will use twice as much file descriptors .
Maybe you reached your process limit for open file descriptors .

If it does not, that is evidence that this is a problem... .
Try changing the "local" to some random local machine and see if the exception message changes .
My first theory is that you have no nameserver / registry running where Naming expects it to be running .
