I would go with '-' or '_' They're URL and file safe, and they looks more or less like padding.

You say "it's only one instruction, it'd be uninterruptible by a context switch." - that's all well-safe for a specific compiler and specific processor architecture but it's not mandated can't consider anything to be thread-safe based....
I've been coming to this site every once in a while to check on the progress of this mod, and having seen none, I think its clear that its is very unlikely that we will see this mod finished (im very sad to say, especially as I'd looked forward to it ...

Looking at the number of significant contributors or lack there of I'd say yes. And I think it is contributing to a lot of our problems with the talent level on the team and recruiting numbers. Hopefully the next couple years will see a significant improvement...
