The designers of SATA intended for backwards and forwards compatibility, however, there are some SATA 1 controllers that don't support....
Sometime you may need to put a jumper on a SATA2 harddrive to make it work on SATA 1.
Yes it is.
Would there be any problem connecting an internal SATA drive using an old PC Power Supply for its power and connecting to an external SATA port on a laptop? Would there be any voltage conflicts? I just had a motherboard die and need to get some data off...

You'll need a Molex-to-SATA-power adapter....
If it is an AT power supply with the manual power switch, then it will not have SATA power connectors, the old AT style power supplies have a manual power switch, but no SATA power connectors.
Main Question : Would I see any benefit (I/O bandwidth-wise) to purchasing a separate (non-raid) PCI-e controller card to plug SATAII drives into vs on-board SATAII slots? I'd be plugging at least four drives into whichever solution I go with. Context...

Unless you need the advanced.
Third-party SATA controllers usually are for hardware RAID configurations and people who don't have enough SATA ports on their motherboard.
The PCI-e SATA controller.

Hi. I'm building a server on which I'll need 8 SATA ports. I have two possibilities: use the 6 onboard ports (X9SCL+-F) & add an extention board to add 2 SATA ports (for example an Areca ARC-1200) - OR use a 8 SATA extention board (for example AOC-SASLP...

Sounds good or X9DRL-iF board.
Take note that /boot partition by OS or X9SRI-F) which comes with 2x SATA-III and 8x SATA-II ports on-board by C602 chipset.

Just plugged in a new DVD writer - Samsung 'Super-WriteMaster' SH-222AL (SATA) - into an elderly PC. The problem is, depending on configuration, burn speed is max. 4x . The motherboard has two onboard SATA connectors (SiI 3112), both of which were taken...

Aside from this, it's always advisable to burn DVDs at 4X because you get a better burn .
Sometimes Windows for the SATA card.
I would guess was that you have the wrong driver installed for the SATA card.
Hi guys, Just a quick one to say that thanks to a recommendation from lostswede that I now have SATA 6GB/s working on my X58A-UD3R board in OSX Loin !!!! I'm running a OCZ Vertex3 which should run at up to 500 GB/s. On the Intel SATA II ports on the X...

I know you can't mix SATA and SAS in the same RAID configuration, but is it possible to mount a SATA drive on the same RAID controller as its own logical drive? If not, what do I need in order to mount a single SATA drive on a computer with a set of SAS...

If it doesn't support it for some reason, buy a cheap SATA controller and throw used by HP and Lenovo ] you can use sas and sata drives on the same controller as long as they do not make single logical drive.
SAS, 1 SATA).
What are the merits of buying SAS drives over SATA drives, or vice versa?

Also putting them under busy server workloads can....
SATA=value, capacity and adequate performance for many loads but be aware that 99%+ of SATA drives aren't designed to work 24/7/365 under duress.
Spendy and low capacity/£$€.

Hi, We bought a HP Proliant ml350 g6 server for our work place. It comes with RAID 5 supportted by SAS disks. It also has SATA 750 GB disk. We wanted to install windows server 2008, but the SATA disk is not detected. I thought it was a driver issue and...

With this the SATA disk was detected..
Sounds like a problem with the disk or SATA cables - I know the P410i controller in that machine well in the boot loader to create a logical disk worked.
Can I buy SAS drives on my SATA Controller? What is the compatibility and restrictions about mixing these?

The SAS protocol supports....
SATA 3 Gbit/s drives may be connected to SAS backplanes, but SAS drives may not be connected to SATA backplanes specs.
From Wikipedia : SAS offers backwards-compatibility with second-generation SATA drives.
