Found this interesting article today. Google is going to track track AIS signals from satellites and make them available on Google Maps (and Google Earth, I would assume).

Its called, "Iridium" Dave Is that right? There are satellites sensitive enough to read AIS Is that right? There are satellites sensitive enough to read AIS signals from space? VHF antennas are not aimed by uninhabited islands.
For all those imperial powers who enjoy a little blastiness in their system defense forces. These satellites would only be available after researching either a Heavy Beam or Accelerator Amplification technology and Turret Installations.

The point of the support stuff (satellites, SDBs, BRs etc, would required hundreds of satellites.....
I think it would be a neat idea having grand satellites, or hell even space buildings akin, and impactors aren't that much better.
