A 404 error is usually a not found....
Seeing where that is pointing when it's not working may shed some light on it .
When you're getting one of those 404 errors, drop to a command line and nslookup or ping the domain name to see what IP is being returned .

With a fully licensed SBS2008 server do I have the option of uninstalling SBS and running the server as a fully licensed 2008 R2 Standard server? Do the CALs stay in effect?
I understand that the Exchange portion would be uninstalled/unavailable.

You would be missing the Windows Server 2008 R2 license .
Not sure about the RWW.
You could just not run Exchange or turn of those services you won't use .
SBS has a different licensing model than straight 2008 R2 Standard .

A couple of ways you could do what you need:
You could setup VPN access through the gateway, configure the user account for VPN access and give the sales guys access to their network drives that way .

new version of SBS for that)
