Hi,
I just got some replacement drives for a server here, went to pop one in, and it turns out that the 72Gig for a Seagate is slightly below the 72gig of the Maxtors that we currently have.
Does anyone know if there is anything hidden on the drive causing...

Unused sectors are used to replace failed sectors so using them right away would strongly... .
Even if you could claim unused sectors to do this, it would be a very bad idea .
You really can't do anything.

I have 14 Seagate ST31500541AS drives, and one them started reporting only 500GB size instead of 1.5TB. This means that both in the BIOS it shows only 500GB, and both in my linux every tool (fdisk, blockdev etc) show the smaller size.

Is that the case for modern drives? Would then this likely be a more reliable 3TB drive? That's assuming the very high platter density isn't itself unreliable... .
I'd had it in my mind that a drive with more than 3 platters would be statistically less reliable .

Haven't noticed any grade drives not going to be very reliable... .
We generally only use Seagate's Constellation series (enterprise class).
Like 3TB HDDs fail more often, not sure if this is true? They are equally bad (seagate, WD, hitachi).
