For a game that I'm making, where solar systems have an x and y coordinates, I'd like to use the coordinates to randomly generate the features for that solar system. The easiest way to do this seems to seed a random number generator with two seeds, the...

For example, you could, for example:
seed = (x << 32) + y
seed1 ^ seed2
(where ^ is the bitwise XOR operator.
Why not just combine the numbers in a meaningful way to generate your seed.

Only one that i have found that has a specific spawn point is the seed for which one measures vertical distance....
The spawn point is not at all tied to the seed, spawn seems to be widely random within a certain area around (0,0).

Very simple question. What does the term 'seeding' mean in general? I'll put the context, i.e., you must seed for random functions.

This is useful for debugging....
The 'seed' for these psuedo-random functions are the starting point upon which future values are based.
"Seeding" random function prevents it from giving out the same.
This is called a "seed".

A)In this case does the random number generator uses the system's clock (making the seed change) on each run?
b)Is the seed used to generate the pseudo-random values of expovariate(lambda)?
Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at stackoverflow):
b) I would imagine will rapidly reassure you....
seed(self, a=None) Initialize internal state specific randomness source if available.
seed twice very quickly may result in the same value.

I'm attempting to use the new standard way of loading seed data in Rails 2.3.4+, the db:seed rake task.

You could put it in a setup call or in a test_helper.rb file .
Therefore just execute that file at the beginning.
The db:seed rake task primarily just loads the db/seeds.rb script.
