How to set an acknowledgement (like email or SMS) before JVM shuts down (this is on the server side, not client)?

I'd recommend writing a Thread and adding it as a runtime hook .
It's explained here: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/lang/hook-design.html.
You may be able to use the Java Shutdown Hook mechanism for this .

VS2008 shuts down right after converting any VS2005 solution.
The solution icon is changed from 8 to 9 but if I try to open the solution it tries to convert it again and then it shuts down (and so forth).
Anyone seen this? Is a re-install the only way...

Hopefully this will break into the debugger giving you....
Optionally set 'break on exceptions' (Ctrl-Alt-E) just before starting the conversion .
Trying hooking up a debugger (ie another instance of Visual Studio) to it, (using Tools - Attach to Process) .

I've rewritten this question because it turned into an indecipherable mess.

Have you tried looking at SpeedFan ? I use that on my desktop and it gives different internal temps
You could try applying a little more thermal paste to the processor, but I wouldn't recommend it, and it might just make things worse, to say nothing ... .
