All that does is put a little fabric....
The fabric softener helps wrinkles.
Using the liquid fabric softener IN THE WASHER where it is suppose to be used is the only way to make sure that the clothes smell good, are soft and are wrinkle free.

It displays "Err1" message? How long ago? Has it ever been right? On my Kenmore softener that code means a problem with the drive torque.

Hi wonderous, As your water usage is going to vary considerably, I would go for a softener directly from the mains, not through the softener.

I wouldn't rent a home that the home didn't have a water softener when they rented it, or didn't understand the effects with and without a water softener....
If this is a higher end home, it should have a water softener.
