If you want an authentic look, you should.
Birch definitely isn't the easiest wood to stain.

Are you referring to VCT floors that look stained after they have been stripped? If so, I've run scraper on the stained area? Or has a urethane based finish ever been applied to the floor? I ran into this on a job several years ago.
