Hope this helps.
Click the "Choose" ikon in the top the subtitles, which actually means it's converting the text to graphics in order to embed them services.
And navigate to the video file you want to add the subtitles to.

To use external file with subtitles (such as srt) start DVD in VLC, select play and when film is actually....
If this doesn't work, it could be the subtitles are hardcoded into film.
In menu Video -> Subtitles track, select disable.

In all cases, I've kept my subtitles as .srt files and then added them to the DVD when authoring.
I've used several subtitles editors on Linux: gnome-subtitles , Ksubtile and KDVDAuthor mostly.
