Given the variety of questions in this section I wondered whether it might be worth the Ed posting something prominently at the top of this section reminding posters of the section's purpose.

What's a good algorithm for suggesting things that someone might like based on their previous choices? (e.g. as popularised by Amazon to suggest books, and used in services like iRate Radio or YAPE where you get suggestions by rating items)

With apt-get, you can include the switch "--no-install-recommends".
You can avoid recommended packages from being included in an install in Synaptic via Settings, Preferences, General tab: Untick "Consider recommended packages as dependencies" .
