What's a good algorithm for suggesting things that someone might like based on their previous choices? (e.g. as popularised by Amazon to suggest books, and used in services like iRate Radio or YAPE where you get suggestions by rating items)

With apt-get, you can include the switch "--no-install-recommends".
You can avoid recommended packages from being included in an install in Synaptic via Settings, Preferences, General tab: Untick "Consider recommended packages as dependencies" .

Otherwise I tend to try and use CSS for layout .
I use tables to manage the layout of my controls if they are representing tabular data .
You can also place controls in td tags.
