Companies are right to be leery of in house applications; I've worked on some of the most horrible in house apps you can... .
It's a devils bargain either way.
There is no guarantee that an off-the-shelf app will last or be maintained in the future either .

In java, you combine the two phases: logging in the code... .
That should give you a lot of information, if your logs are detailed enough .
After a crash, you don't have logs during the crash itself, but you still have all your logs before your actual crash .

Notice the curly braces, not square braces.
