I booted up today and my disk hasn't stopped thrashing in 20 minutes. CPU activity is flat; the only processes using anything right now are firefox and dwm.exe and it's ~1%. So I figured I'd look at what's happening with Procmon.
svchost.exe is making...

From my Post on What’s making my disk thrash in Windows XP was the cause of the thrashing.
I have some Vista thrashing myself....Not sure it's not "Windows Defender" but yea the break down of the svchost processes.
Out Procmon.

This is a programming question in the sense that I'm experiencing a hardware issue which is keeping me from being able to develop effectively...
Anyway, my PC is running insanely slow, but it doesn't appear to be a memory consumption issue or a CPU issue...

My guess is you're.
Having too small a page file sometimes causes thrashing.
Page file settings.

In some projects, but not all, when I open a designer for the first time (either WinForms or typed dataset) Visual Studio thrashes the disk for up to 30 minutes while freezing (this appears to be reads and writes with between 100 and 140 pages\sec). Once...

OK, so it looks like it was defunct database connections... .
Try pagedefrag.
It could be registry fragmentation too.
It sounds like you are either running short on RAM and opening a designer puts it over the top or your hard disk needs to be defragmented .

I have 4 gigs of RAM, but Windows still thrashes disk sometimes (especially often when app is minimized for some time and then I activate it again). Completely stupid, coz task manager shows 2 gigs of RAM are free. Is there any way to prevent Windows ...

Is the system slow or are you just using the word thrash to disk thrashing (if you have system memory in abundance), you are looking for NTFS tweaks.
Minimize them rather than leaving them in memory.

How do I accurately observe and measure the amount of virtual memory utilization and activity on Linux? I know there is vmstat, but how do I interpret the results? Or, what is better?

"vmstat" will tell you what you want to know....
It has the additional useful ability that it can be run on a remote machine and gather information directly via ssh .
Have you gone thru the manpage?
man vmstat
If you need historical information, I use kSar .

I've seen the related questions, and they don't provide answers.
I'm running Windows Server 2008, Service Pack 2, 64 bit, on quad-core servers with 32 GB of RAM. I regularly work with files that are 100 GB in size, and I've run into a rather odd problem...

Hey people, first time poster. I just picked up a 2010 Teryx from my neighbor fairly cheap. The rig is bone stock with 190 miles on it. His 30 year old son took it out "something happened" and brought it back with the tranny sounding like a thrashing ...

A belt that has been burnt and has a flat spot make a horrid sound, speaking from experience .
