For a free tool that give you basic static analysis, check out the Microsoft Code....
It has lots of measures, including things like developers within the scope of their open-source project .

I think you are muddling the difference ....
If the tool makes you more productive, why cripple yourself by continuing to do things the hard way? If you take the argument to the extreme, one could say that the .NET Framework is just a tool.
