In addition to a different electric plug configuration, what do you need to adapt to the UK voltage? Are portable surge protectors advised?

The next issue is connectivity; the US and the UK use different plug and wall socket morphology for electrical power outlets.
We use the same voltage and mains frequency as the UK.
