Be a bit street smart and aware of your surroundings .

From Montecatini, but is a bit much for a day trip, so, you'd lose a lot of time traveling.

I personally....
They are not "tourist friendly." I would say: "Go, if you must, but travel ask a travel agent for their advice.
Have you considered inviting a friend, mother, cousin? I travel alone most of the time there and will not return.
Would you drive yourself (and your family) everywhere or how else would you do it? Settle a debate between DH and me. You and the family fly in to, say, LA ....and then what? How do you get around and see the sights if you don't know the city?

Driving.
Driven in plenty of big cities that I'd never been to before when traveling on business and I've in Ireland because we were traveling around the whole country so we definitely needed one.
