My family is very concerned with me traveling with girlfriends to PV, staying at Vallarta Palace. Please advise regarding safety. I am on the verge of canceling my trip due to stories re: kidnapping, drugs, etc. Is this not area not safe?

From Montecatini, but is a bit much for a day trip, so, you'd lose a lot of time traveling.

They are not "tourist friendly." I would say: "Go, if you must, but travel ask a travel agent for their advice.
Have you considered inviting a friend, mother, cousin? I travel alone most of the time there and will not return.

Would you drive yourself (and your family) everywhere or how else would you do it?
Settle a debate between DH and me. You and the family fly in to, say, LA ....and then what? How do you get around and see the sights if you don't know the city?
