I am in the process of deglossing the neck of my bass. Got some great advice from a luthier at hammond ashley and the sticky on this forum. I am wondering about the advantages of using 100% tung oil vs tung oil finish (which I already have). It sounds...

2 coats of tung oil finish would work well.
The tung oil finish products are processed and have additives such as drying/curing agents.
100% tung oil will not dry to a hardened finish state.

I'm just wondering what the difference is between the Cabot tung oil finish and Waterlox. Is one more durable or just better?

However....
Waterlox is one of those that uses tung oil.
Most use linseed oil but some use tung oil if they want a darker varnish and a more water resistant varnish.
All varnishes are made with a resin and a drying oil .
And tung oil.

If it's good but nowhere near as much as that picture... .
I've used Tru oil before and swear by it.
Tung oil doesn't quite dry the way Tru oil does.
Much! but wt's the difference between tru and tung, if i want a satin finish like the pic, which.

So... I'm getting a body made. Black limba back, flame maple top.
I'm going for a natural finish and I already have some tung oil from another project and, given the striking appearance of the black limba, wondered if I can use the same oil on the body...

He sanded the body down to 400 grit, then grain filled... .
Here's one thing I read on another forum somewhere where a guy was tung-oiling black limba.
Black limba has some cavernous pores in the grain.
HOWEVER..
Tung oil will be fine on limba..

Well, after 8 hours of sanding by hand, I almost have the previous finish off my bass body. I only have to sand the back and go over the whole thing lightly with some finer paper.
I decided to use a tung oil, because I love the natural looks of wood on...

I'm using Formby's high gloss any proven methods with this brand tung oil when it comes to applying it.
