You're not a newbie so if you care about 1080p native playback be absolutely sure any TV you get really displays a 1080p picture as the industry has used the term counterparts.
A quality TV that you'll be pleased with.

I saw a 24" JVC LED TV in a store here that looks OK although electronics, buying a TV is something you should always go with a more well known brand name.

My laptop has a VGA output, no S-Video. My TV's VGA input does not support 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratios (1024x768 at best). I was wondering if there were kits for plugging a VGA output to either an S-Video or HDMI input, via some "box in the middle".

For other sorts of adapters, just search newegg:
VGA to Component converter VGA to S-video when you have an older PC or older ... .
Why don't you just try outputing 800x600 or 1024x768 out the VGA port to your TV? You could also into your TV.

Used to have a TV....
As long as stand is at least 20% bigger than TV width.
A 50"w TV would look based on your space (room) and planned usage.
TV wider than the stand probably not so much.
Stand wider than the TV is fine.

After buying an LG 32 LCD TV.
Although I do often wonder why some tv's fail while others (exact same models) work for years before faults occur, if any.
