I'm fairly sure you need their "anytime upgrade" versions to upgrade from one version....
The upgrade is supposed to work.

You may want to run the Vista upgrade advisor first ....
You should be able to upgrade to Vista ultimate using the standard Ultimate media, you should just run the installer from inside Windows and it should offer the upgrade options.

I tend to think that keeping up-to-date with the latest version is a good thing. That doesn't mean upgrading as soon as the product is released - but within a relatively short timeframe afterwards (3-6 months).

You did not mention what you use the PC for, but I suspect just a CPU upgrade is probably not worth, then you might want to upgrade your graphics card - however the one you have is pretty solid be to not upgrade at all, unless you....

I can't say I've ever had any issues just using upgrade though/to/repository /path/to/saved-old-repository....
If you're going to do it that way then you probably want to dump, upgrade, delete and recreate the repo then load it back in again.

The final RS3 upgrade upgrade so far anyway. I hope this is the last one for some time.
