You should use:
Date.parseExact....
I made the mistake of not testing with a day <= 12 (duh) .
The code is at http://datejs.googlecode.com/files/date.js
EDIT: It is not safe to left date.js determine the format string automatically .
Datejs can parse that.

I can't comment on importing specifically to the UK....
Similar to you, we have offices in many countries and often we make our purchases in the US due to the lower cost .
It depends on the software and the license agreements, but it many cases it is legal .

I would hard-code the list in the source code.
I don't think there's anything built-in into the iPhone SDK .
You could download it from wikipedia or some other source .
