Most of the guidelines and checklists available on the internet are for "web usability" is there any checklist for "software usability"?

Usability is a big topic.
usability is best evaluated by watching a set of representative users try to perform specific tasks see useit.com for more info, checklists, articles, et al.
If asked, I would bet that every manager would agree that software usability is important. Unfortunately, when it comes time to put their money where there mouths are, they shy away and tell the programmer to just make it usable. What is everyone's experience...

Usability does not factor into the PM's decisions at all,....

Try a few projects on your own, build a portfolio... .
Read stories about in your current job, then you can say you worked at least part time on usability.
Read stories of great design teams.
Psychology, graphical design, color choice, usability.

Usability is a state of comfort the user feels with the application, the better its usability will be.
A program which fills the needs of its users and does it well .
How do you test the usability of the user interfaces of your applications - be they web or desktop? Do you just throw it all together and then tweak it based on user experience once the application is live? Or do you pass it to a specific usability team...

It's only when we are making big changes that we go through usability, repeat.
Normally, we test the usability gather feedback from real users.
Hardest part is to keep your mouth shut.
