Alternatively, you can slice the pods open and then them leave really nice vanilla ....
Tastes so much better than vanilla extract or vanilla essence.
You can then use this when making fresh custard etc .

Very very little of the extracts these people sell http://www.vanillamart.co.uk/pure-vanilla I certainly won't bother next time ! On that Asda site I would go for the Neilsen extract.

You're lucky to get a 1/4 teaspoon of seeds from a single of vanilla extract AND the seeds ....
I vanilla bean could never give so many seeds.
Use one teaspoon to start.
Of vanilla extract.
One vanilla bean is equal to one tsp.

You could leave the flavor enhancer out of the cake and it would be just fine .
Too much powder!! try half that amount and don't worry about the water issue! It really does not matter .
