I want to use Skype. Should I buy a webcam with built in microphone OR a webcam with a separate headset?
Will the built-in microphone have much worse audio quality? I'd rather not mess around with a headset if I can.

I hear no complaints about poor audio quality.
I do have a wireless headset though i prefer a microphone for video chat .
I for one don't like talking to folks in a video chat while looking like mickey mouse .
Depends on your personal preferences.

A web browser (your choice at the images on the Dell website, it suggests there is a webcam built into the Studio 1435, and as NT would usually be the webcam....
Manager (as NT already mentioned) would list a webcam device if one existed.

From that point you can use any Ruby technique you want to process the JPEG image you got from videodog... .
It's a small program, which does one thing and does that well: capturing a frame from your /dev/video0 device .
Since you're using Linux, try videodog.
