I don't think so. I've seen certain posters (mainly one) talking about how UF is on the upswing and we need to enjoy those two wins because any more are not likely. Do any other UF fans think you're in for anything less than 5-7 years of struggling mediocrity...

There is doubt, but I believe FSU wins the ACC next year and UF does not win the SEC East.

From the netsh context I can type "wins" and I get into the wins context just fine.

No idea, why this Windows XP is missing the WINS tool.
So that machine looks like it needs to be upgraded to SP2 at least .
List and the winsock ("wins") is missing.

Is there any compelling reason to be concerned with running a WINS server on a small network? What applications require the ability to resolve LANMan and/or NETBios names?

Exchange 2000 and 2003 do need WINS....
You may want to setup a WINS server and see how many pings it's getting a day before you decide not to implement it or remove the WINS server.

WINS out of the picture and just use DNS? Servers register themselves, then clients use DNS have to use FQDN e.g.

I have a pfsense firewall in my house, with a PPTP vpn set up for external access. Without a WINS server, name resolution does not work over the VPN. I have another old box I am thinking of installing samba with WINS on to get around this.

Hybrid nodes will attempt WINS resolution first, then fall.
The NetBIOS node-type determines this.

We have domain controllers in three locations running the WINS role. Two of them are Windows 2008 and one is 2003. They are set up to replicate WINS with eachother every 30 minutes (the default, I believe).

You don't need it at all unless you've got some genuinely ancient apps that use WINS for name resolution; otherwise you can just get rid mappings in the others.
