What is the difference between IDE and SATA type DVD writers? My motherboard supports both. Which one do you recommend?

As Rodeey said, there isn't much a difference feature-wise.
As long as your burning software supports SATA drives then that's what you should get .
Short of the bus type (IDE vs SATA), there isn't much a difference to you .

I don't know if that's too server heavy for your needs but the process... .
The workflow involves sending data to the server for report generation, then it is sent back to the client in pdf, word, etc format for display .

Sockets are easy to use and also support communication over a network .
Message queues would probably do what you want and support atomic queuing/de-queuing .
System V IPC is somewhat fiddly to use but it is a mature, robust technology .

You will lose exceptions if another thread throws it before the reader dealt with the existing one .
You will not be able to get away this easy .
